Straining to Hear and Fend Off Dementia
February 11, 2013, At a party the other night, a fund-raiser for a literary magazine, I found myself in conversation with a well-known author whose work I greatly admire. I use the term “conversation” loosely. I couldn’t hear a word he said. But worse, the effort I was making to hear was using up so much brain power that I completely forgot the titles of his books.

For Some, Mild Slips of Memory May Be Very Early Alzheimer's
July 17, 2013 — For years, doctors have dismissed patients' worries about mild slips of memory as a normal part of aging. Now, as the focus in Alzheimer's research moves toward early diagnosis, researchers are looking for ways to tell whether some of these “senior moments” are an early sign of the disease.

My Mom had Alzheimers and on December 4, 1994, it killed her. It had taken her mind long before and living was just a rote for her. It is a insidious disease that I would never wish off on my worst enemy.

The Romans sweetened 'bad' wine with lead acetate, used some lead piping, some jewelry was made from lead and there were a few concoctions boiled in lead pots. Interestingly, lead was known to be poisonous at that time too. I guess they just thought it wasn't that bad.

There was a scare about aluminium in the late seventies, and though it's toxic, and one of many metals found in trace levels in the body, there's no conclusive evidence connecting aluminium intake and dementia. (of which Alzheimers Disease is one form)
British coal miners, at risk of silicosis from coal dust, would inhale "Macalpine's Powder" before a shift as a preventative measure, which effectively lined their lungs with powdered aluminium. Coal miners had no greater risk of dementia than the general population.
