I think that it has been around, at least, since the early 1980's, but I would also guess there is a huuuge difference between menus, sizes and prices.

Not all of the blame can be put on McDonald's though, Americans simply do not know anything about food and the overall quality of meet and normal food is rather bad. :p

Well, some of it is and some of it isn't. There is plenty of good healthy food available at the grocery store. There are also a lot of things like chips, ring dings, cupcakes, candy . . . .

Since big farming industries have put smaller farms out of business, that is how it goes as far as meat is concerned. Of course you can get better quality of meats at small local butcher shops, but you pay a lot more money.

You can buy free range chickens and eggs and such things at the grocery store. Some things aren't that much more expensive. I buy free range chicken and eggs usually. I mostly eat chicken anyways. Once in a while I'll have a T bone steak or some hamburger for tacos or something like that. I prefer chicken though.

Organic fruits and veg are also available at most grocery stores, even cheap ones!

And I will tell you something else, a box of Ring Dings is not that cheap either. If someone chooses to buy that box of Ring Dings as opposed to a dozen apples, that is not anyone else's problem. There are healthy choices available for everyone.

In the case; cut the burgers, flush the Coke down the potty and scrap your SUV's. Replace this with the habit of running more than you eat. Great success. :)

This is going to be very politically incorrect and probably not very popular with the libs, but oh well, the truth is the truth, and the truth of the matter is that a lot of people are fat because they are lazy, and they are poor because they are lazy, and not because there are "no choices" out there for them. That is a liberal myth and excuse making to avoid personal responsibility.

Now, it doesn't take a genius to make the connection between lack of job, savings account, any kind of grown up responsible behavior = laziness and/or immaturity, and unhealthy diet and lack of exercise is just another symptom of laziness. Do you see the connection here? Now, liberals will try to blame McDonalds, and other such entities, and while I agree that their food is really not healthy, it is a person's own responsibility to take care of him/herself and to make the right choices.

I make awesome burgers though. I saute onions and garlic and red peppers and mix that in with the burger along with some Worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper of course! They are to DIE for. :D

You only live once and death is guaranteed. Live however you want. If that involves burgers, beers, and big old bellies have at it. Feel blessed you are not some scrawny person fighting over bags of UN rice.

Some people say it's the breads and grains that are making Americans fat too. I don't know. I love breads and eat them all the time and I'm not fat. I've always eaten bread. Some people might be allergic or have a bad reaction to gluten and grains and other such things, but I don't think that's all that common.

A lot is genetic too - some people have awesome metabolism and can stuff their face with all kinds of crap without gaing one single pound of fat. Others can barely enjoy a small shot of Pepsi.

But of course, the real explanation to the problem is the one you gave above; irresponsibility.,

This is a huge problem that is costing our healthcare system and taxpayers hundreds of billions, raising our national debt, and making us less productive. We need to tax junk food like we tax alcohol and cigarettes other products that addicted a large part of the population and costing us a lot.

That's fine, but when a person gets sick, then they shouldn't blame anyone else.

Why though? It is a free country and if someone chooses to be fat and unhealthy, who are we to tell them they can't? I can understand making them pay more for their health insurance though, and making junk food unavailable to those who are receiving public assistance.

Yeah just ruin the jobs. Sure being unemployed, sitting on the couch will make you less fat. Defo. Totes.

I say cut the tax on all foods and make people pay for their own healthcare. :D

By that reasoning we should dispand all sin taxes which have been part of the reason the smoking rate has fallen so much. I do believe in freedom and I didn't advocate any laws banning eating junk food. The problem with junk food is that we are geared to be addicted to it and companies make junk food and display it so we will always fall for it. Most of those people who are fat don't want to be fat. I myself am somewhat overweight and am constantly trying to lose weight which has prevented me from gaining any more at least. Since we have to collect taxes anyway, why not collect it on things that are doing harm and costing us money instead of taxing people for earning money? Thats one reason for other sin taxes.

I remember a boy who used to live next door who was around 15, and he usually would get a ride home from school from his mother, but on the days when his mother had something else to do, he would walk. He would come through the path in the woods all sweating and huffing and puffing with his big fat red face. Imagine, being so out of shape at such a young age? How unhealthy is THAT? He didn't have a "genetic problem." His problem was overeating junk food and not getting enough exercise. He was a spoiled brat too, and the mouth on him was pretty bad as well. He would be playing video games in the summer with his window open and screaming out cuss words at his computer. OMG. Thank goodness they moved. Lol.

Well, why should those who snack sometimes but only in moderation have to pay more? I don't think there is anything wrong with having some junk food necessarily, as long as you don't overdo it. I like my occasional snacks, especially brownies. Lol.

The problem is that some healthcare conditions can cost hundreds of millions and will bankrupt most people if they get them. That cost will then be shifted on whoever is paying insurance or is getting other bills from the hospital. Since healthcare is so expensive is costs $10,000 per man, woman, and child many people will simple not be able to afford it and will watch preventable diseases turn in killers and life ruiners. You have presented a dreadful idea.

People aren't overweight because they sit around, its that food nowadays is so bad for you and is made to taste really good and we see it everywhere we go. Walking around isn't enough to make you not fat as walking a whole mile is equivalent to not earning only one fifth of a big mac. Its the diet that is the main problem not so much the exersize.

Yeah, just put those warning-labels on every food deemed as "dangerous" and tax the hell out of everyone. While they are at it, they might as well regulate sales of fettucine alfredo not to mention sofas (god that evil product of capitalism just keeps people from going outside hiking!).

    Absolutely ridiculous and contra-productive.

The next step will be taxing tomatoes after some "genius" (government funded) scientist proving a correlation between tomato-consumption and butt cancer and government will implement a tomato-tax saying "we did it with sofas."
