If thirty thousand deal annually, and numerous school shootings could not even motivation the administration of Barack Obama to implement new firearm-related restrictions in response, the matter is completely hopeless. No new legislation will apparently come about, so there is no point in bothering to call for it. There is no point in even talking about how government supposedly has the authority, if they possess no interest whatsoever in actually utilizing it.
For the first two years of the administration of Barack Obama, the democratic party held the majority in both the house and the senate. They managed to enact the affordable care act into law without a single republican vote of support. They possessed the perfect opportunity to implement whatever firearm-related restrictions the party so wished to see. But they did not. They utilized their supposed super-majority power once and only once, and that was to implement the affordable care act. After such, the tactic was never tried again on their part. It is their own fault, not that of anyone else.
Background checks on all private sales have been discussed since long before that point in time. Even if they did not, the argument being presented currently, is that the federal government has the total authority to regulate firearms in whatever manner they see fit, on the basis of regulating interstate commerce. So it is being asked, if such authority truly does exist, why has the federal government, for the last seventy five years, refused to outlaw the ownership of handguns under all circumstances, on the basis of regulating interstate commerce, since their mere existence is linked to so many annual deaths?
Inane deflection! Politicians REACT according to public sentiment. The gruesome shootings that renewed the call for effective background checks only occurred AFTER 2010. Prior to that the Dems had their hands full trying to fix the BROKEN healthcare system that was the #1 priority of the American people.
