I know this is an eternity ago, but i do not recall any talk of global warming then. Winter of 1963 in Europe was their coldest winter since the 1930s. Birds walked on the canals. I now am amazed birds were there, but my photos prove they were there.

I would rather poke myself in the eye with a dull knitting needle than debate climate change on an internet forum, but anyone interested in the Netherlands and/or speed skating should Google the Elfstedentocht ('Eleven Cities Tour'). The 200km race in 1963 was one of the toughest in history due to the conditions. Unfortunately the weather hasn't been cold enough to hold the race in 22 years and there is some question as to whether or not it will ever be held again.

I WAS sad to hear about this. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/04/190424202543.htm It reminds me of the words of a retiring marine biologist. He worked with Jacques Cousteau for many years and probably knew the world's oceans as well as anyone. When asked if he would miss his work, he replied by saying that he was glad to be retiring. The worlds oceans are dying and he doesn't want to watch it all disappear.
According to a beer commercial, they have beer on the frozen canals in the wintertime. - You mean they don't put extra tables and chairs out on the frozen canals during wintertime? I've been but not during winter yet.
