Everyone on the Right feared that a deranged Trumpist did it, and everyone on the Left hoped the same thing.

But it turns out that it was yet another person who actually should have been accommodated indefinitely in some sort of nice summer camp type of place ... and when/if released, watched closely.

Which raises an important factual question: if someone is clearly mad -- I won't try to define that here -- should they be incarcerated in a mental institution?

I have not investigated this, but, as I recall, a long time ago this could happen. Then -- or so I read somewhere -- a malign combination of liberatarian-liberals and tax-hating conservatives decided to close these institutions down, and replace them with 'care in the community' ha ha.

Now if this is substantially true, why is there not a cross-party cross-ideology movement to rethink the idea of letting people who are clearly insane, or behaving insanely, people, roam the streets? I would include insane behavior repeated threats to kill all [ fill in the space ]. I think this is especially vital in a country where it's not difficult to get your hands on a rapid-firing high-velocity 20-round magazine rifle. (Instead of concentrating on the device, concentrate on the people who use the device.)

Of course this could be subject to abuse ... in fact, we could confidently say WILL be subject to abuse -- so it's got to be hedged around with lots of protections.

A campaign to bring back mental institutions and to give the state the power to involuntarily incarcerate people in them would have to have a two-pronged thrust in its propaganda.

To liberals, it would have to say: how cruel to throw these poor souls onto the streets! They need help! And look at the jobs it would create for public-sector unions.

To conservatives it would say, getting tired of stepping over piles of human excrement in liberal-run cities? Lock 'em up! (The excrementors, not the liberals.)

Something we could all agree on!

    First of all .....

I don't think Trump supporters feared that this shooter was a Trump supporter with a political motive.

And, secondly you have to understand the Left is comfortable with a certain level of violence because it helps push their agendas.

    In other words ....

They are not interested in protecting anyone especially the children in public schools.

A perfectly good mass shooting and the left cannot exploit it. Hogg must be disappointed.

The killer is the poster boy for more gun control. He was ordered by a judge to get a mental health exam, which should have led to his guns being taken away.

There's an old poem about a dangerous cliff which people keep falling over. The debate is whether to fund a fence at the top of the cliff, or an ambulance down in the valley.

There is certainly a theoretical case for more gun control in the US, which already effectively bans machine guns and 'destructive devices'. 'The Right to bear Arms' or not, don't try to buy a hand grenade in the US, or a mortar, or a Claymore mine, despite the fact that a well-regulated Militia ought to have all these handy devices available. But effectively enforcing any serious gun control -- I don't mean the ban on semi-auto rifles that look scary to people who know nothing about guns -- would be something else -- and only the most extreme liberal would go so far as banning all handguns -- but you can do a lot of damage with a nice Browning 13-round 9mm. Thus gun control, as a practical measure, seems to me like the ambulance down in the valley.

Incarcerating crazy people, however, would probably also not be entirely effective. As I recall, some of the recent mass killers were NOT on anyone's watch list. However, we could catch some of them, and a serious program of rehousing mentally ill people, in a humane environment where they could -- theoretically -- get help, would have other advantages. I'm not saying it's the Fence at the Edge of the Cliff, but it seems to me that it's something that a wise liberal politician, or a wise conservative one (if the Trump phenomenon has left any of that description) should start raising.

Doombug called the murder of 5 people "a perfectly good mass shooting."

    Shame.

Are you a terrible human being for making a sarcastic comment wherein you called the murder of 5 people a "perfectly good mass shooting?"

Did you just say that someone who gets a mental health exam should have their rights stripped from them?

I am sure you would love to make me out to be a bad person but not because of a comment I made. What you look to do is try and shame me for simply pointing out the truth. That truth is this is how the left looks at mass shootings. They do not care about the victims unless they can exploit them.

I think Doombug was writing in the spirit of liberal Democrat Rahm Emmanual, who famously said, "You never want to let a good crisis go to waste".
It's easy to generate a lot of faux-indignation over quotes like this, especially among those suffering from irony-deficiency-anemia.

Another situation where all the writing was on the wall..

Maryland law should follow the domestic violence legislation that has been enacted in other states. AKA: This guy would have been prohibited from owning a firearm.

But wait... Maryland is a bastion of liberalism. What happened ???

Did you miss the "ordered by a judge" part? You know, because of threats and stalking.

So someone ordered by a judge to have an exam should have their rights stripped away.

I fail to see the improvement you seem to suggest.
