What is it with these junky A320 French-German Airbuses? The odds of having both engines take a dump on takeoff is supposedly astronomically high, yet it has happened again.

The first time it happened Captain Sullenberger landed in the Hudson River.

Yesterday it happened again, and the pilot belly landed it in a corn field.

Can these junky engines not handle seagulls? Seems like it.

i'd say a pretty solid plane if it made a emergency landing in a cornfield with no engines and only 1 person was kept hospitalized + nobody died

It's a damn good airplane and the CFM56 is a solid engine. No jet engine in the world can survive sucking multiple large birds through the blades.

These aren't geese we're talking about and IIRC, the engines are supposed to be designed to take multiple bird strikes. Guess not. :bored:

Do you know the size of the birds and how many the engines ingested?

Well, Russians are saying those were seagulls. Definitely smaller than geese.

And how many were ingested by the engines? Given enough sparrows ingested any jet engine will fail.

It was seagulls, just like the ones that took down the Sullenberger plane. Maybe a couple per engine? It wasn't that many which should be a concern. I assume the same type of engine....both defeated by a few seagulls.

Those seagulls should be designated as heroes in Ukraine - they stopped the flight to Crimea at the cost of their own lives.

I applaud the Russkie captain who did picture perfect, by the book, without hesitation landing! Bravo captain, you’ saved 232 lives! :applause::applause::applause:

As for the Airbus... comfy but fragile plane. I’m surprised it did not break apart hitting the corn. Only because of the masterfully performed landing by the Russian captain, of course.

No. The Captain did emergency landing, the French plane simply complied.

No turbine engine is designed to take bird strikes. Foreign Object Damage FOD is usually fatal to turbine engines, as this incident demonstrates.

The Ural crew did a fine job, leaving the gear up and shutting down the engines. No fire. The crew showed a perfect response to an unfortunate situation, just as Sully did.

Turbo fan engines have two places the air flows. The big fan that you see in the front of the engine is just that, a fan with a good portion of the air it moves traveling outside of the engine but inside of the cowling. The idea is to make these fan blades strong enough to handle a bird strike and to direct the debris through centrifugal force away from the center of the engine where it will be ejected rearward. The second place the air flows is directly behind the cone that you see in the center of the big fan, sometimes has a Nike looking swoosh painted on it. This is where the combustion air enters, gets compressed, fuel added and burned. There isn’t any extra room in the core of the engine for bird parts, and if it happens, all bets are off.

I don't think people disputing this know how a jet engine works. How could you?

We've been through this before and Boeing has half the crashes per flight. Both have comparable FLE/event rates.

The plural of anecdote is not data.

Of course. Next time, try to seat away from the lavatories and not in the middle seat.

No no... that’s where German pilot flew Germanwings A320 into the ground.

Has anyone noticed that birds are attracted to Airbus's more than Boeing aircraft ?

The problem can be easily fixed.

Put a siren on the Airbus's along with disco lights warning the birds of an approaching Airbus.

Paint the Airbus's with a bird of prey paint scheme.

Or use big radial piston engines with propellers that will chop up the birds.

    My friend,

Thank you for the uncontrollable laugh! I almost pee’d myself, imagining Airbus with siren and disco lights, taking off! :roflol:

Cant a diamond grate be fitted over the intake? I guess not or they would. Maybe a funnel pointing outward, to shed carcasses?

Another European PR hit piece, doesn't work too well obviously as Boeing is closing deal after deal worldwide.

Everyone is on to the "fake news" angle that companies and countries are trying, especially when they come from Progressive sources

Boeing lost massive deals, airlines say the quality is pathetic and they even find garbage in new Planes. Meanwhile Airbus has beaten Boeing and is Nr1

    Hopefully Boeing goes bancrupt.
