Attempt to fire powerful NY prosecutor appears to be latest move to protect Trump

The Trump administration's attempt to oust one of America's most powerful prosecutors raises fresh and glaring suspicions about its assault on the independence of the justice system and its respect for the rule of law that underpins constitutional governance.

Attorney General William Barr's declaration he replaced Geoffrey Berman of the US Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York renewed the debate over the extent to which Barr is acting on President Donald Trump's interests rather than the nation's. The office of Berman, who is refusing to quit, is leading a probe into Trump's lawyer Rudolph Giuliani and associates and has also indicted a Turkish state-owned firm involved in an Iran sanctions-busting case which Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has raised with Trump.

    [...]

The President had been thinking of removing Berman for two years and believes that the investigation into Giuliani is an attempt to damage him politically...

    _______________________________

Berman refuses to resign because he knows, among other things, that Trump is corrupt to the core.

As long as Trump is President, he will try to obstruct justice in this country.

    Only five months left.

Let us hope that there us a God and that he is listening and watching what Maggots and politicians do. There is a Maggot making believe he is the AG of the US. Instead he is the personal fixit man for a guy who has occupied the Oval Office for almost four years.

God needs to trample on and out the evil that is in Washington DC.

Once again, I will ask the reason given for his removal. And, once again, I will surely receive responses saying that POTUS doesn't need to have a reason. But Barr does, doesn't he? Or is he the same - can play chess with staff members at his will? And if so, why don't ALL Americans want to know the reasons for change?

You DO know he's a registered Republican installed by Beauregard Sessions, right?

And please tell me you know he hasn't been removed yet...

But to the OP, there are 7 months left, not 5... to the day

I did not, but I looked it up briefly... As expected, it only appears in alt-right whackadoo sites...

You know that the SDNY is NOT within the beltway??

You know that Berman has only been in this job since early 2018??

You know that you appear a little touched with fever?

He was removed for investigations that Trump doesn't like. There is nothing partisan about this. It's not partisan to investigate Trump's associates for criminal activity.

Trump is simply the most shameless criminal ever to infest the White House in modern times. He lies big and lies constantly, believing that it will all work out for him because he has gotten away with so much so far.

It's incredible the level of corruption in this administration. Most of the time it's his own people that is bringing out the truth against him.

Can't wait for January for the trials to start against Trump, Barr, and his other people.....

Berman is a REPUBLICAN that voted for Dirty Donald. But his job is to investigate criminality and corruption which he has fund in abundance among Dirty Donald and his political hacks !!

He was appointed by Trump. He's a republican. Apparently "partisan hack" means "might be objective enough to apply the rule of law to Trump's buddy's and that can never be tolerated."

Also alarming is that Trump has been purging officials from the Office of Inspector General, the authority to which, according to Bill Barr, complaints can be taken if there appears to be interference in the investigations underway by the SDNY. This looks like systematic dismantling and corruption of the the justice system to benefit Trump politically. It is time, as far as I'm concerned, to begin new impeachment proceedings, because Trump has once again gone too far.

Trump’s purge of inspectors general is alarming. His replacements may be worse.

    By David C. Williams
    May 21, 2020 at 4:03 p.m. CDT

David C. Williams served as inspector general of the U.S. Postal Service, Department of Housing and Urban Development, Treasury Department, Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration and Nuclear Regulatory Commission during four presidential administrations.

President Trump’s spate of inspector general removals this spring is alarming, and every American should be concerned about the state of federal government oversight. But the problem with Trump’s actions is not simply removing the watchdogs — it’s also the chilling effect left on those who remain and the fact that the president is replacing some of the ousted officials with thinly credentialed political loyalists.

Inspectors general were established to conduct independent, dogged investigations into federal government agencies and report their findings freely to Congress and the public. Yet at the very time we need thorough oversight of the federal government’s expansive coronavirus relief spending, the president is conducting a war on those tasked with holding him accountable.

Trump’s removal of inspectors general has a deleterious impact on the entire inspector general community. Particularly with the removals of Michael Atkinson as inspector general for the intelligence community and Steve Linick as inspector general for the State Department, there’s a strong indication that the president fired them simply because of their involvement in investigations that cast the administration in a negative light.

All oversight must be rejected. All transparency must be rejected. All separation of powers must be rejected. All limitations on executive power must be rejected. I've never seen a US party this dedicated to executive overreach and expansion of executive power.

The corruption started before he even got in to office and has become more bold. Fortunately, Bunker Donny will be up for impeachment/trial in November. From what I'm seeing from the voters right now it doesn't look good.

Oh, it definitely started before him. He just took it to 11 and his party has enabled him in doing so. Nixon 2.0 and then some, only with fewer people from his own party willing to stand up to him.

Never seen a party prepared to corrupt the justice system and forever destroy trust in our institutions to protect a crook in the White House and try to save face and hold onto a senate seat. Dare I hope that this time it'll finally be a bridge too far even for McConnell et al.?

Trump on firing of Geoffrey Berman: 'I'm not involved'
By Erica Orden and Manu Raju, CNN

Updated 5:21 PM ET, Sat June 20, 2020

(CNN)President Donald Trump on Saturday denied firing Geoffrey Berman, the powerful prosecutor atop the Manhattan US Attorney's office, shortly after his attorney general sent Berman a letter saying the President had done so.

Attorney General William Barr's letter on Saturday said Trump had fired Berman after he refused Barr's effort a day prior to oust him.

"Unfortunately, with your statement of last night, you have chosen public spectacle over public service," Barr said in his letter to Berman. "Because you have declared that you have no intention of resigning, I have asked the President to remove you as of today, and he has done so."

Trump, however, speaking to reporters shortly after Barr's letter was made public, said, "That's his department, not my department." He added: "I'm not involved."

He apparently cannot be indicted until he's out of office, and that will only be in January....

It's funny, because I read Obama waited until May 2009 to start removing most of the Bush US Attorneys.

Biden will be knocking out Trumps guy's by 5pm on Inauguration Day....

Besides, girls usually push... men throw...

From your link, here's little Lindsey pretending he also has a pair

And in a significant announcement Saturday, Graham announced that he will honor tradition to let home-state senators sign off on a replacement for Berman's post, meaning that Democrats essentially have veto power over a replacement to a position considered the most powerful US attorney job in the country.
