I was given my first gun, a single shot 22 when I turned thirteen. That was over seventy years ago. I have owned and still own numerous guns. I retired from the Air Force and qualified expert with a S & W 38 Special and an M-16.

They might recite the rules, but that is simply too young.

I don't say any of the above. Rather, all I ask from you people is the right to have the same tools to protect myself as are used to protect Bloomberg and other elite liberals. But how bout you liberals repeal the Federal law that exempts all retired law enforcement from State and local gun control laws and then we can talk about more gun control for the little people.

That's why you have an elitist attitude, Air Force. :p Just joshin ya.

Maybe your 6 year old is too young, but many others aren't. There are some who shoot competitively.

Except that research indicates children are put at risk when you give them guns

Closely supervised is fine. Unsupervised is too young.

    Really? That would work?
I have a better idea - let’s REALLY a level the playing field and stop all men from owning guns

Despite your all caps assertion, you are incorrect. As anyone with firearms training knows, in a self defense shooting or law enforcement shooting one shoots to stop the threat. Not to kill.

Often, just showing you’re armed and ready to defend yourself is enough to stop an attack.

And killing is how it stops the threat.

I do not know what your 4 rules of gun safety are. I could probably guess. Safe handling of a gun is more than being able to recite a set of rules. It is years of good habits so that I don't even have to think about it.

Correct, risk is mitigated by education and supervision. Kids are put at risk at the swimming pool.

The 4 rules of firearm safety are not mine. Everyone should be familiar with them.

Stopping the threat and killing are related, but are not the same thing. In some cases a threat can be stopped by a gun without firing a gun. In other cases when a gun is fired, the threat is stopped when it is incapable of action. A person can be incapable of action and not dead. Likewise a person can be shot with a fatal wound and not be stopped.

Killing is how a gun generally stops a threat, and is why its made.

Many crimes are thwarted by merely presenting a firearm. Not every criminal needs to be shot or killed.

I'm glad you told me that. I have never heard that nonsense before. I have been a gun owner for 65 years and have never used one to kill anyone. The are also used for hunting, collecting, shooting competition as examples. I have engaged in all of them I have never engaged in shooting someone. I have even used a gun to stop theft on my property without shooting it or pointing it at anyone. Sometimes the mere presence of a gun can accomplish self defense.

Guns are misused sometimes. That isn't the fault of the gun. It is the fault of the person behind the gun. Cars are misused too. Think of all the people who have been killed by drunk drivers. It is not the fault of the car. It is the fault of the person behind the steering wheel.

If your goal is to eliminate private gun ownership then I would recommend staying away from nonsensical statements like the one I quoted above.

Do you really think that there is one every day? I do think that there are too many. I think that the media should regulate themselves as to not over hype every single time it happens. It's proven that they have a major impact on other "copy cat" shootings. Maybe we should institute stricter laws on the media where they can report an event like this for only one day.
