Good thing this kid wasn't living in England or similar cultures that forbid such acts of self preservation. Even if she was being beaten, raped or even killed, no child or adult would be allowed to use the overall best protective device on planet earth to protect her (a handgun) in these restrictive societies.

Wonder what the rap sheet on this home invasion artist looks like?

Wonder how long he will spend in prision, if at all?

If that happened in my home, I would be in the bedroom, door locked, behind the bed on speed dial to 911, and the double-barreled shotgun aimed at the door.

Honestly...I don't know how I would react. I would hope I could be cool and make good decisions----but unfortunately that isn't "me".

Simple - a gun is not the only weapon that can be used in defence

She shot the guy before he even opened the door. No other weapon would accomplish that. No weapon would have worked for her. He would have overpowered the girl.

But not always safe - perhaps we should start a separate thread on this and just discuss it along with some possible solutions in todays world

No but a baseball bat could have got him as he opened the door - or you do the unexpected and push the door open or.........

Now we are also assuming this guy was going to hurt the kid - maybe he was just a thief and would have taken off if he knew the house was occupied

Now I am going to play "devils advocate"

What would have happened if instead of merely hurting him she had shot him dead?

A BAT? A 12 year old with a bat against a grown man? I dont think so.

You trust the intruder to not hurt YOUR child. I won't do such a thing. And if she shot him dead...she shot him dead. But she wouldn't be dead.

But was it the intention of this intruder to hurt the child? Many burglars, here at least will not harm someone knowing that takes "break and enter" into a whole new criminal league

Don't be mislead by fictional hollywood stories

If I ever had a gun in a house with children there's no way in hell I'd let them know how to access it. Sure, it'd be a good lesson to go shooting sometime, but I'd be unlocking the cabinet, not them.

Conservatives seem so intent on getting rid of violent harms that they ignore innocent harms - seems sometimes like they think a girl being shot by an intruder is any worse than a girl being shot by her brother while playing.

    I so agree with this.

But let us say that she did shoot the guy dead. There would have to be trial or at least a coroner's inquest and she would have to be a witness. Now this MIGHT have been an archetypal criminal slathering to steal and rape - but guess what? Most criminals are not like that. An awful lot of them turn out to be average Joe's who have lost their jobs, need some quick cash think the house is empty and try to break in. High probability he has a wife and kids.

And no before you go screaming "LIBRUL!!" I know there are guys out there that make "Chopper Reed" or the Kray Brothers look like perfect angels - like all of society there is a mix

My concern for her would be the emotional harm that would result from having killed someone.

She would no more be charged with a crime, killing him, than for felonious assault just wounding him.

As for the intent of the intruder, live or dead, that could not be proven but the girl was definitely in gravest extreme when he forced his way in and then was inches away from her.

I certainly hope I would never have to do such a thing but I will shoot to kill if an intruder comes into my house.... allowing for any reasonable chance that they could successfully be ordered to leave.

Who knows. If a person has no plan, and must start thinking what to do when the emergency begins, chances for a good decision go down.

Grab the kid and lock the bedroom door is the first part of my plan.
Take the TV, but dont try to come thru that door.

I'm trying to figure out why you didn't want this girl to shoot this intruder.

In my city a few months back a teen home intruder assaulted an elderly couple, raped the 87 year old woman, shot them both

I dunno....maybe you have more trustworthy and kind home intruders in Aussie.

Arent you also intent "no way in hell" on preventing violent harm, that you figure the chance that your kids are totally irresponsible overrides any chance that they are responsible and might need to protect themselves from violent harm?

Look I said in my post that I acknowledge there are intruders out there that are worse than demons ( I love selective reading)

But I am also thinking of a 13 year old girl having shot someone - that in itself is emotionally traumatic to have KILLED someone could and in all probability would put her into the sort of acopia that sees teens becoming "emo's"

It is a bad situation - and it could have been worse yes but this situation as a lone indicator is not enough to validate guns

Killing someone while protecting your family---no matter what age---would be something to deal with. However seeing your family die or be harmed---is a hard thing too.

One thing I think you should keep in mind is that we have more unpredictable violence here in the U.S---due to racial/cultural tensions and due to the fact we have Mexican gangs and drug dealers that work on the border and is part of our illegal immigration problem.

In YOUR country---banning guns might work well. But I believe it would be disasterous in ours.

But it is the very best. Handgun: most firepower, stopping power in a wearable, lightweight package that can be held by weaker adults or children. Usually fires quickly from 6 to 18+ times. This is why all intelligent police agencies have their patrol cops wear them.

But...if there is some other, better weapon that does all this, I want to know.

How was the girl supposed to know in the heat of the moment exactly what the intentions of this criminal were?

Regardless of what his actual intentions were, the person in the home and any investigators or jury members afterward should assume the very worst. It is better to err on the side of caution when it comes to a situation like this where you are dealing with a criminal.

It also leaves difficult to heal and more often fatal wounds and from MY viewpoint that is not a good thing. You also have to be trained to hold and fire them otherwise more likely to miss than hit and they can become a weapon in the hands of your attacker

Now in this case the criminal was apprehended by police - what if he had not run but had become more angry because he was wounded - reached in and grabbed the kid and then did everything everyone is suggesting

Good lord but you lot watch too much fiction on TV

I agree and when I faced one I did suspect the worst - fortunately this being Australia he was not armed and I was able to push him back out the door and slam it

Here again in this case, you are more worried about the life of the felon than the protection of the person being attacked.

I'm not the one here who is infulenced by liberal media outlets such as TV (news). Guns are not miracle weapons, but they are the best things for personal protection available today.

Most gunfights---not in war---take place within 21 feet. The "Rule of Threes" usually apply with gunfights: there are within 3 feet, last 3 seconds and take 3 rounds.

People are easy to kill, but hard to stop. All guns can kill. A person can get nicked by a wound from a small bullet, and die weeks later from infection. But the device needs to stop the attacker right away. The weapon needs stopping power. The very best firearm would be a large .50 cal. machine gun. A person will almost always give up their attack when hit square in the chest or head with one. These are too heaby to be quickly held and fired at a charging attacker. Even Rambo could not use one.

Rifles are very good if your out in the backcountry or if there is someone you feel threated by further away. Myself, I would not feel threated by someone 200 yards away unless they were shooting at me. Rifles and shotguns are not good for the 3 foot rule, and can be more easily grabbed away.

The baseball bat you reccommed requires even more space to swing and hit, and won't scare away like a gun. I wonder how much better a person would react to smashing open someone's skull with one, as opposed to pulling a few small wounds from a handgun into the same attacker. I think the emotional trauma would be worse using a more primitive club type weapon.

You are a cleaver girl, and if you bother looking up the stats, you will find that the mere presentation of a gun will cause all but the most determined attacker to flee or surrender without a shot being fired.

However, felons that will assault someone at home or on the street are very often hopped-up on some controlled substance, and will not go down with multiple rounds unless hit in the right spot. Still, the best hope for the 12 year old child, the old man, or most anyone else faced with a large attacker is a handgun.
