Well as you know Jack if we do not pay our BBC license we cannot watch any station. It will change in time either to complete repression or back to impartiality and freedom of speech. In the meantime we can watch all the stations and get some idea of what is going on. The BBC presumably under the deal of Mark Thompson with Sharon chose to go by the form of 'reporting' Giles believes that news should be. That is to allow the opinion makers to speak with no questions asked. I don't know if you had a tv in 2008 but it was the most awkward 'wtf is going on' amateurish performance I have ever seen. I know a lot of their journalists resented this. Possibly most of them have left as the BBC became more experienced at giving things from an Israel/US/UK gov approved position leading now to the BBC being totally dominated by pro Israelis where it simply would be impossible for them to be impartial even if they believed they were.

I was reading recently that a similar thing has happened in the US since 9/11 and investigative journalists tend to be seen as a bit 'nuts' or even classified as 'terrorist'

Just as Thatcher was amazed at how easily she was able to destroy class consciousness, the neo con's in the US must be laughing all the way to the banks at how easy it was to destroy freedom of speech in the US and with that educated democracy.
