And would Americans be allowed to enjoy a German-style Carnival or Fasching or Fasnacht in the USA?

    German Carnival has come nearer.
The 28th of February will be "Rosen-Montag" = Rose Monday.

My wife is from Trinidad, where Carneval is more modest than in other countries. I think some of her family watch the parades at a safe distance sober occasionally.

YES! and our country's oldest and most famous version of Carnival - Mardi Gras - was brought here by the French Catholics who settled in colonial Louisiana, and it was first celebrated around 1700. At first it was mostly, if not exclusively, a Catholic festival, so it wasn't celebrated much across the predominantly Protestant United States. Today Catholics, Protestants, Christians and non-Christians of all stripes celebrate Mardi Gras. It's the best party in America.

The most famous and popular site of Mardi Gras is New Orleans, and people from all over the USA travel there every year to participate in the festivities (and it is a WILD party):

New Orleans is my favorite city in America. There's no other place like it...

Christians are "allowed" to do anything. They realize however some things do not edify so they abstain. That is the law of "Liberty". Only "Religion" "Liberals" and "Country Clubs" restrict liberty.
For those "non-shallow thinkers"......"The Kingdom of God is not meat, nor drink, but righteousness peace and joy in the Holy Spirit!"

I don't see Republicans floating the idea of "Cancel Culture". In fact, I see them even promoting the idea of liberty for even progressive Marxist scum. Liberty for all. Republicans are the ones against state sponsored mandatory masking as well.

That's why we don't call them "liberals".

We wouldn't want the ghost of Jean-François Revel to rise from the grave and slap you upside the head. ;-)

Dude .. you said "ONLY Liberals - Religion - Country clubs" restrict liberty .. I said .. you left out Republicans.

you then bring up examples of Libs restricting liberty... Got it .. but this does not change the fact that Republicans restrict liberty as well ..or are you color blind ?

Hey Dude! I don't see how America 1st Republicans restrict liberty. You made the accusation, you provide the examples. Where does color enter the picture? If you can entertain that challenge, it would be Dudical! Remember, your liberty ends where mine begins.

You just moved the Goalpost .. what a joke "America 1st Republicans" .. what the heck is that.

Sorry Dude .. we are talking "Republicans in Power" not some made up nonsense group.

How many examples would you like .. should we start with Daddy Bush or Baby Bush. That you can not come up with an example of these folks restricting liberty ... would show that you have no idea what liberty is.

So this is your chance for redemption .. Just one example of liberty restriction from Daddy Bush or Baby Bush ... come on .. I'm rootin for ya.. you can do it.

Why not? It precedes the great lent, so let people indulge themselves. Of course, it depends on how far the indulgence goes. Brazil comes to mind. Shame on them!

Besides, how many people follow lent today. I'm Orthodox and the Catholics call it the Black Lent because of its severity. But in the West, because of their heavier diets, they were allowed to eat fish, milk products and eggs. As for the Orthodox, they're not allowed to eat meat, fish, eggs, milk products, wine and oil. Sea food other than fish is allowed. So if someone can afford it, they can indulge in lobsters - which at one time in the American Northeast was so plentiful that it was the food of the poor.

Today the Fast is easier because of potatoes, sweet potatoes, tomatoes and peanut butter, but it doesn't mean that most people follow it other than monks and converts. Fasting foods were though the only foods that appeared on the markets in the Orthodox countries at one time, so it was easier to uphold.

I think there was another reason though for the Fasting rules, because the 40 days would have given the chicken eggs a chance to hatch, and also for the new born animals to grow. It could also have been a time when the fish were spawning their eggs.

It is, and it probably came from the Germans as did the Christmas tree.

The Christians were celebrating Saturnalia a Roman holiday, so in Britain they would drink and be rowdy - that's why the Puritans banned it.

I think in Northern Greece there are still some that celebrate Saturnalia in the original way, and put on animals heads. I'm not sure though. There are though many customs that have been carried over from the pagan era - and why not, as long as they don't cross the line?

I forgot that I wanted to distinguish between the Pilgrims (religious separatists who moved to Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620) and Puritans (strict Anglicans who founded Boston in 1630).
There's a story from 1621 that some men wished to abstain from the daily work on Christmas on religious grounds. The men who worked returned at sunset and found them playing games. That was an outrage because they claimed they were going to do religious things all day.

Celebrate a carnival? Of course! What are they going to do shout for joy? What's wrong with that? I vote yes for everybody!
