I'm not sure they are worth the trouble. I'm for the succession of the San Francisco Bay and LA Metropolitan Area and the coastal counties that link the two. To continue that GDP they need access to the American Consumer, and balancing tariffs could easily make up any cash shortfall, and they will need food and water, which they quite likely will purchase from the New California that remains in The Union. And, our Navy would continue to protect them from invasion, for a sensible Naval Protection Charge, of course.

Given a little time, they would very likely reapply for Statehood, a much smaller Geographic State, and that of course would be subject to negotiation.

That portion of CA is not, by any means, essential to the Union.

I'm speaking to the federal response to a state full of people who opted to secede.

Do you seriously think the union would survive if the federal government opted to use military force to try compelling a state's residents to remain in the union? I don't. I think there would be open revolt against the federal government from every corner of the nation, and I think it would be nearly instantaneous due to the flood of instantly uploadable videos depicting atrocities committed by government jackboots.

Societies are resilient, but they are not forever. (see: Rome)

But we know how this would turn out, as we have an example we can look to.

    this didn't happen last time.

Agreed. In this day and age, the US could not get away with anything like Lincoln's dirty war. Too much media pressure.

If a state left the union, it would not longer be a state in the union. It would be a foreign state, just like England or France.
