The bet-you'd-change-your-tune-if-you-were-being-mugged taunt is ultimately hypothetical. Would someone be scared if they were held at knifepoint and mugged? Of course they would be. They'd be well advised to hand over the money and let the little bastard shoot through. As for its relevance to any other topic - none.

No, & outside of raw numbers or percentages, trying to compare America & Australia, regarding crime & related firearm usage, would be like comparing apples & oranges.

The USA & Australia have totally different histories related to becoming the existing States they are today, very different forms of government, as well as overwhelmingly different sizes of populations, as well as totally different firearm histories, different firearm laws --- different laws in general, & different firearm cultures, not to mention many different ethnic backgrounds as well, thus making virtually any legitimate firearm comparisons meaningless & almost totally irrelevant. In the end you can only end up with false comparisons.

History has nothing to do with it.
If you have a gun problem, you have a gun problem.
You only have to legislate to create a solution.
Your problem is that FSA (fragmented states of america) are still relying on the constitutions 2nd amendment, which was passed in 1791. Dont you think it should be amended again to bring it into the 21st Century, or are you going to allow the status quo to continue ad infinitum.
The second amendment doesnt even require guns to be kept safely when not in use. You can just have them laying around anywhere if you wish. That in itself creates danger, particularly when the gun is loaded.
No amount of arguing about history, etc etc will convince me that the authorities in America
are not sitting on their hands with this issue.

I presently live here in Australia, for the better part of a quarter century, & I know full well the very distinct differences........America & Australia are quite different, in so many ways....making valid comparison........especially regarding this matter...........impossible......& totally false

Only a personal perception that can't be born out in fact because there are no valid comparisons.......'safer 'is a matter of your personal "feeling", which until rescinded by the government, is still a right granted to the Australian People.....you still have the 'right' to your personal feelings/perceptions, & with them your personal opinions.

It may be a popular opinion amongst all Australians...but really, we dont need an opinion poll to compare the safety of the two places, because it sticks out like dogs balls......

Until Amended, like it or not, the US Constitution.....written in the 18th Century is & will be America's Law of the Land.........period.

Now, just because some self-righteous leftist monarchists from down under think they have a legitimate say about the way America is or behaves, they should get over their little selves.......they have nothing that America cares for.....as America see it, Australia is mostly a clutch of jealous little people.....jealous of what they are never capable of being.....a nest of eternal American wannabees.........

Because the love of my life's adult children live here, & she wants to be near them, so I chose to be here, rather than lose her.

In the end I'm here because I want to be, & I will stay as long as I please.....I always get what I want. ;)

Now, not getting away from why we started this conversation........Comparing the USA & Australia regarding firearms & related criminal outcomes are not possible, because there is a distinct lack of true, definable commonality...........historical, social, cultural, ethnical, governmental, & legal.......so any realistic comparison is invalid in the end.

Americans have fought for everything they have or ever had, including a Revolution against tyranny .... for Liberty & Freedom.....central to that were firearms.......Americans not only wanted, they vitally needed firearms........the savage natives, predatory wild animals, the Spanish, the French, the English, the Germans, the Japs, each other....firearm not only for defense & offense, but to put food on the table......while Australia has never had to fight for anything to speak of.....From the colonial beginnings Australia's most difficult opponents & fights have been against the dingoes, cane toads, rabbits, foxes, sharks, stone fish, snakes, spiders, crocks, each other, & alcohol abuse.

Australians & Americans are like Night & Day.........Apples & Oranges......the common thread to some extent is language, religions, & skin tones.......that's it.

Oh and we had our own First Nations people to senselessly slaughter.

But we aren't as revolting as you, we use democracy.

We have had soldiers in every war since the Boar war inclusive.

The method of warfare using infantry, armour and air was first used by General Monash in the first World War which became the turning point of WWI, a whole war before Paton used similar strategies. Long before the navy seals Australian military devised a force they called Z-Force. They became famous for swimming into German harbours with rebreathing apparatus and attaching limpit mines to German ships. The British and Australian armies built the Commandos from this culminating with our SAS. The toughest soldiers in the world.

Australia has always punched well above our weight.

The basic swimming stroke is The Australian Crawl and the ballot system you use in elections is called the Australian Ballot.
I could rave on all-day about every day inventions from Australia. The ultrasound your wife had to see your child the photocopier you use or the Wi-Fi your connected to.

Rack and pinion steering and the limited slip diff in your car. The black box flight recorder and the refrigerator in your kitchen.

For a country of one tenth the population of the USA we hold our own pretty well in the Olympics. That's enough for now.

Mate ,do not underestimate an Australian, those that have are usually sorry. Don't believe me, ask a vet that fought besides Aussies in Vietnam or the Middle East .

Yes we are different we are smart, strong and civilised .

Historically similar except we didn't kill half a million of our own people for a change in government policies.
Socially very similar , cultural similar, ethical.. .Yes we're different we have them. Government who knows, I am still trying to figure out why electoral colleges. And best of all we are Trumpless even though we have a Trump wanna be trying to get re-elected.

No but it annoys the crap out of me to see people ignoring or worse dismissing the indigenous history. We just did not make movies about "cowboys and Indians" although many of those are now seen blatantly for what they were
