I don't see Trump as being deceptive about his expectation that things return to normal. The Pentagon, on the other hand, seems not to have as much confidence. Even if they're just preparing for worst case, their view of worst case appears to be much worse than Trumps and mine.

The military is terrified of the people revolting. We are receiving calamitous reports on the bad state of the economy. But, I don't think it's going to go badly. Congress has already passed a rescue aid package, and there's talk about another one. People can sit out this disaster and then we can find our way back to normal once the Coronavirus is no more.

The idea that we can print our way out of this is dangerous and incorrect.

There is no way to sugar coat most of the world not working for several months. It is going to be bad. Very bad.

And no government fiat can change that.

True we can't print our way out of this, however that ship sailed long before covid 19 , hell even long before Trump..

I agree it's bad but i think the American people and it's economy are poised to jump back in when it's safe.
I expect the last half of this year to be incredible economically.

As a person who works "essential retail" in a rather less than affluent community people are spending tons of money on non essentials.
    Home building hasn't noticeably slowed
People are remodeling like crazy, upgrading their homes, gardening, building out buildings.

I am not pessimistic about our future at all.

Saddened of course by the illness and death but the economy from my perspective is cruising right along..

The hysteria has been stirred up. It appears the country can't let it go.

Ok, but my post was before I took another look at it in this thread post:
Waiting until 2021, 2022 to fully reopen country will end in civil war

Well, I know that I have spent my dwindling set of dollars on online learning classes (for COBOL, the in-demand programing language who few if any know, but is the underpinning of our government and financial system) in an attempt to boost my career set. This was in expectation of getting a coronavirus relief check of $1200.

    Yup! Very, very bad.

The other tools to correct a failing economy have all been used up. So throwing money at the problem is all that's left. Hey, if I get some of that money, I'm not complaining. We're never going to pay it off anyway. Or, at least not for a very long time.

It will take many years and possibly generations to get back to where we were before the virus struck the world.

We can do a lot better than get back to where we were, which was a horrible place to be. Or have many of you forgotten already? It would be great to get back to a place where America was put first, where respect for the Constitution and the flag was as important as what the lottery ticket numbers were. Where Congress acted for the betterment of the people. Where lying and cheating were scorned upon. Where citizens took pride in civic duty and cared about their neighbors. If all we can hope for is to get back to where we were, count me out.

That "place": never existed. That was a fantasy used to sell breakfast cereals in the 1950's. Some of us had it good back then but most didn't, and not just minorities. Life wasn't that easy for people who just didn't have lots of money either. I know, I was one of them and lived through those times

'America First' is how we got where we are now. You can't expect people to pull together for the common good when your attitude is generally, "I got mine, **** you" and you can't expect countries to cooperate with your efforts to stop pandemics when you act as if you're constantly at war with them in everything but shooting anyway

It will not take generations. It did not take generations to recover and rebuild the world after WWII. This is far less to recover from.

NORAD quarantined itself in Cheyenne Mountain a month or so back citing the Cvirus threat to military operations. I think the military is just taking no chances and having fun with emergency funds.

    Heres to hoping anyway.

Nicely put, but you're wanting to go back to something that never existed in the first place.

I'm for going forward after this crisis, armed with a myriad of lessons learned and a determination to never get caught out like this again.

I do really like your statement about lying and cheating being frowned upon. Trump seems to easily get away with both, every day. I keep hoping that my fellow Americans will stop enabling him.

I disagree. This is America. We've rebuilt our economy before. I have confidence we can do it again in short order. And "back" is the wrong word. Change is a universal constant. I think we can go forward into an even better economy, perhaps one that isn't so dependent upon the price of oil. Let's see what sort of political will we can muster before we go all doom and gloom.

    To lighten up my reply:

    Got a link?

I'm waving the bee ess flag on that one. I live in the shadow of Cheyenne Mountain, can see it unobstructed from my windows. I have former coworkers stationed at Peterson and Schriever AFBs. Other than the Academy closing, there has been no big military movement here.

There now, you see? We don't disagree on everything after all.

I disagree that it will bounce back this year, but we will be stronger on the other side of this. You know that old saying, what doesn't kill us makes us stronger? My version: what doesn't kill us has made a grave tactical error. :strong:

As for the housing and home improvement business: my son is having a lot of work done on his house and has it listed for sale. There's been a lot of interest. And what is a seller's agent's favorite two words? Bidding war.

I'll go further that that, it won't take any time at all because I don't think there's any damage being done.

Where I live the grocery stores are open and so is Walmart, Target, even Best Buy and Micro Center. Some stores are staying open MORE, opening early so older people can shop in relative safety.

I think the problem comes from two groups, old line ultraconservatives who think the Republic will fall unless 99% of us are working as hard as possible 24/7 and millenials who think the world will end if the bars and tattoo parlors stay closed.

I grew up when most of us did trust our govt after our people worked and sacrificed to win ww2 ..I remember when Americans had a different attitude that was more positive .To claim this didnt exist in the post war years means you were not born yet.

My early life was more like leave it to beaver than Modern Family.

If you think this ssociety has not went to hell in a handbasket you are nuts.

The america before the murder of jfk and the false flag that escalated our war in Vietnam was different .

A kid growing up in the late 40s and 50s grew up in a better country with more responsible and moral people. This time set the stage for civil rights that was long overdue.

Losing trust in our govt due to new 3 letter aagencies with too much power that was copied from the nazis had a role in this lost of trust. We found out these agencies did evil things. So much so jfk wanted to take away much of their power.

We thought America was a force of good in the world while it became clear it wasnt. The power of corporations that fdr was gonna rein back in after the war died with him and their increasing power on govt insured that the people gradually llost being represented by DC.

Today the people who are supposed to represent us dont, and millionaires rule over us who in turn represent only other millionaires and billionaires.

Congress gave ex presidents a pension because Truman not being a crook did not use his office to get rich and he was poor. Today if an elected official in dc is not already rich when elected they end up being rich after leaving office

Oh, yes, by all means, let's revert to the 1950s, where women had no rights and few choices in how they lived their lives. But please, if we do go back to that era, promise me it will include the Eisenhower tax code. (I think you should google that for yourself.)

Wow. You honestly think 20 million people just set their alarm clock and go Back to work on a given Monday? All is well then?

We just flip a switch and turn it fully back on?
