"Aspiring scientists"? What a racket academia turned out to be.

NEWSFLASH: the reason science is a joke now is because we no longer have scientists who educated themselves.

If you want to be a scientist, start with a potato and go from there. Libraries are free. And at this point, I would trust a self educated person, in any field, 10xs more than the academia certified "professional". They can't even hold doctors up anymore as proof of their relevance. I look at people in white coats like they're a mayor from New Orleans.

My understanding was that they were clamouring for more free money. I suppose they couldn't resist a could Trump bash while they were at it.

Given that 37% of voters with postgraduate education voted for Trump, I wonder how they feel if they went to the march hoping for funding, but get a bunch of politics instead.

Global warming is the left's religion and scientists pushing the hoax are false prophets.

The subject of man made global warming has been around a lot longer than 18 years.

So, are you telling us that you support cutting environmental research by 31%. medical research by a similar amount?

I see this smug, and supercilious tone from all the right wingers here.

We don't need no stinking progress!!!!!!!

So if Japan discovered a new battery technology that could make electric cars ACTUALLY affordable, would they not share that tech with the world for free? For the sake of the planet and all.

An odd thing to say since fearmongering and appeals to ignorance are staples of right wing media, right wing politicians, and a core Trump message.

This whole earth purity movement is rather absurd. Progress has always been a blend of goal orientation with scientific restraint. But today people have gone kooky and identified scientific restraint as the goal, as if improving the environment is the goal rather than improving the human condition.

i never said it was the only driver of climate.. its just the main driver of climate, unlike the GW crowd who say the main driver of climate is co2.

and if you love doomsday scenarios. the fact that a 4% drop in solar output created the 2nd largest mass extinction event even with 4500ppm co2 (to help keep the planet warm) what happens tomorrow if the solar output drops just say 1% or 2% and we only have a measly 400ppm co2? do we plunge into another 40million year iceage?

best thing we can do if we love the environment is to burn as much fossil fuel as possible to bump up the co2 level.. Life loves it warmer anyway.. and just think how much the plants will love all the extra food in the atmosphere!

go trade in your prius for a gas guzzling suv.. the environment will thank you

People are part of the environment and what affects the environment eventually affects us, so improving the environment is improving the human condition.

What makes you think that everyone with a post graduate degree is a scientist? School teachers, lawyers, doctors, and any number of other non science related professions REQUIRE a post graduate degree.

Science is being extremely rude whenever it contradicts ideology.

Your opinion on the science means nothing and the sun output is our argument. Thank you for admitting humans do not drive climate change.

So you think caring for the environment does not also improve the human condition?

There is a very long list of absurd notions that are held with fervor by the sort of people who let a man in the AM radio do their thinking for them.

But few are more idiotic than the notion that the entire study of manmade global warming is nothing more than a con job for grant money.

This is a notion that has a very specific origin. The notion was first advanced by junk science fiction writer, Michael Crichton. It was the latest salvo in the oil industry's well financed campaign against anything that might encourage the development of renewable energy sources.

Crichton had no scientific credentials whatsoever. He was a writer of apocyliptic pulp fiction. But he wowed the crowd at the oil soaked American Enterprise Institute, when he offered his anti global warming manifesto and first advanced the notion that the whole thing was just a giant global conspiracy by people in lab coats to get grant money.

The absurdity of it is amazing. The entire amount of spending on grants for global warming researh in the entire decade was less than Exxon/Mobil made in three months.

But the idea grew roots in the feeble minds of talk radio types. where this sort of half baked nonsense thrives (remember, facts are never necessary in far right wing world).

Crichton even devoted his final novel to this idiotic notion, and attached his manifesto as an appendix.

Since then, the notion has been promoted by the American far right and the oil and extraction industries that play them to their advantage.
