As most of you know, I'm a Practicing Agnostic who doesn't really think much of a god or higher power. But By gosh I celebrate Christmas every year and always will. One thing I've noticed is that most Agnostic/Atheist people I know also celebrate Christmas so their children feel special or not left out. That's cool with me. One thing I also realized is that I don't know a single atheist who celebrates Hanukkah.

Any atheists or agnostics on here celebrate Hanukkah? If not, why?

there are also Atheists who celebrate St. Patricks Day and the San Genero festival.

why? national/cultural elements of the holidays.

Christmas to me has absolutely nothing to do with Christianity. it is nothing more than an opportunity to please children and celebrate life and family, friends and happiness while giving and getting small symbols of endearment. If there is to be some spiritual aspect I find it in the actual reason behind what the Solstice and Yule holidays it was before being hijacked, though the Saturnia version also has pretty cool aspects.

Doesn't really answer my question. My question was geared toward why atheists don't celebrate the Jewish holiday as much as the Christian one

Certainly not I, but then Hannukkah is a Jewish thing, is it not? It's tied to their religion and culture.

I'll happily get together with family and even decorate my own place a bit during Yuletide. I don't do it in a religious way, but in the modern, secular, anti-Christian way of hanging lights and maybe having a pagan tree :D

I, too, like to think of it as what it was, or at least appears to have been, starting out - a winter solstice celebration. It brings joy to a cold, dismal time of year. I've noticed that we seem to have the most holidays during the cold season, and I expect it's basically for that reason - people wanted nice things to look at and do during that time of the year. And, of course, they probably had a lot more free time available relative to the busy warmer growing and harvesting season.

Yea but atheists get to PICK their religion to celebrate. It doesn't matter how many more Christians or jews there are, the atheists get to choose either one.

Because there is no time off or advertisement in this country for the Jewish version, and they never made a Santa or dancing deer.

I don't celebrate Hanukkah, but I do celebrate Passover. It is more of a "that's the holiday my neighbor invites me over for" thing.

Only Irish atheists celebrate St. Pattys day? That's insanely false. Almost everyone in the entire country celebrates it. I'll need to see your statistics and what site this information came from

I was talking about in the USA, and pointing out that Irish Atheists celebrate St. Patricks Day even though it has religious connotations, due to its ethnic origin.

same with Italian Americans and San Genero's.

    do you understand now???????????????

    that's ridiculously false.

most non-Irish people I know in NYC do not celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

its a holiday mostly for folks of Irish ancestry

Ron, entire cities dye their waters for St. Pattys day. These cities aren't all Irish atheists.

Here's one of many cities who celebrate st. patty by dying their river. This city alone has 2.7 million who adore their st. patty pride. Many other cities pay tribute by doing the same. As proven, most of the United States celebrates St. Pattys day. Even everyone you know in New York

Most Americans do not actively celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

i dont understand your claim but it is surely one of ignorance on the subject.
