The Deception of the Priesthood and Despotism

I was looking for another quote from Hegel, and ran across this paragraph that I had forgotten about. Here how it reads:

"542. The masses are the victims of the deception of a priesthood which, in its envious conceit holds itself to be the sole possessor of insight and pursues its other selfish ends as well. At the same time it conspires with despotism which, as the synthetic, non-notional unity of the real and this ideal realm--a curiously inconsistent entity--stands above the bad insight of the multitude and the bad intentions of the priests, and yet unites both within itself. From the stupidity and confusion of the people brought about by the trickery of priestcraft, despotism, which despises both, draws for itself the advantage of undisturbed domination and the fulfillment of its desires and caprices, but is itself at the same time this same dullness of insight, the same superstition and error."-- Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit (1807)(pdf.), paragraph 542.

Speaking of Christian fascism, Hegel—not Marx, but Hegel—wrote in 1807 of how the church ruled over society by conspiring with despotism, but then the Enlightenment challenged this alliance, the church’s authority, and its insights. Religion is an effective disguise for fascism, because some of the insights shared by the Church and the Enlightenment are the same.

“a. The struggle of the Enlightenment with Superstition
    548. It [The Enlightenment] entangles itself in this contradiction through engaging in dispute, and imagines that what it is attacking is something other than itself.”
    (Ibid., para. 548).”

What are those insights, or a better word, assumptions, that both the Enlightenment and the Church share? They are that the modern person can know existence to some degree adequately; that humanity is made in the image of “God”; that knowledge is distinct from representation, or phenomena. Author, Paul Tyson, notes in his 2014 book, “Returning to Reality” (p. 69) that these assumptions--and others such as Platonic realism--are entirely medieval theological concepts shared by modernity. Fascism is ideologically parasitic on the church and superstitions.

Here is an interesting lecture by Dr. Sadler on Dostoevsky's famous "The Grand Inquisitor" story of which the above essay is based.

Christians are those who follow Jesus Christ. Are you saying that Jesus followed Himself?

I assume you're a European since they're the ones that tend to equate American conservatism with their own nationalism. In the US conservatism means a strict adherence to our Constitution, since it guarantees our freedoms and limits the power of the Federal government.

The liberals in contrast, want a stronger government control over our lives and they have managed it, so that we are now living in a totalitarian state. It will only get worse.

What has been happening within Christianity over the past eighteen centuries will make more sense if you watch this five hour interview by an amazingly well informed man from Australia.

I take all of this to indicate that maybe... just maybe... high level members of secret societies infiltrate each new, growing and successful branch of Christianity as it begins to rise up and they know how to mess it up much as Balaam son of Beor advised Balak King of Moab to send out the young women of Moab to entice the men of Israel to commit fornication and then HaShem would curse them.

The American Catholic Trappist monk Thomas Merton and writer was murdered within minutes after giving an anti-war lecture in 1968, at the International Asiatic Conference in Thailand. U.S. financed Thai assassins are the most likely suspects along with French priest Father Francois de Grunne who was the last person seen with Merton moments before Merton was shot in back of the head. No investigation of any kind was done by the Thai police. In the documentary below the camera pans to Merton's audience of terrified priests and nuns. Francosi de Grunne gave conflicting accounts of the murder just before disappearing. Note that 1968 was the same year Bobby Kennedy, Malcolm X, and Martin Luther King were also assassinated.

Out of curiosity, is your hatred confined to Christians or do you hate other faiths too? What about atheists like Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Castro, the Kim trifecta, etc., etc., etc.,? Did you hate them too or, again, only Christians?

Perhaps in non-Christan cultures. No fascist regime (Italy, Spain, Germany) ever advocated for a Christian platform, nor did they ever adopt Christian policies.

Why do you hate Jesus and his followers?

When did you stop beating your wife?

Hitler as you well know continually advocated German Christian values since you like my post on the topic. Here are some other points that are true about Nazism and its relation to German Christianity, and even Christianity in America. Here is my summary of various sources:

    1. Social Fascism: Fascism, in the social sense, is ultimately an affirmation of “traditional values,” The Nazi slogan was , “Kinder, Küche, Kirchen,” or Children, Church, Kitchen.

    2. Fascism was ultimately born out of, and supported by, conservatism and the belief that Western Civilization had become decadent and self-ruinous.Source: Fascism Part I: Understanding Fascism and anti-Semitism by R.G. Prive - October 23, 2003

    3. So fascism, as it developed, was reactionary; it was a reaction to the perceived problems of modernism, and the immediate perceived threat of Communism.

    4. Fascism labeled their enemies as decadent “liberals” and “Social Democrats.”

    5. Early on fascism was seen as a movement that embraced Christianity. In Germany fascists promoted what they called “true Christianity”, which was essentially “Christian fundamentalism.”

    6. The fascists opposed atheism, modernism, the Enlightenment, intellectualism, liberalism, democracy, Social Democrat activist, Marxism, secularism, true laissez-faire capitalism, and evolutionary theory. What is most important to note about this is that many people, not just the fascists, shared many elements of these same feelings. These sentiments are in essence the definition of right-wing social ideology.

    7. Hitler himself complained of evolutionary theory and advocated teaching creationism in the German schools. "God Is With Us": Hitler's Rhetoric and the Lure of "Moral Values" by Maureen Farrell “The book The German Churches Under Hitler includes his assertion that secular schools should not be tolerated while Hitler's Table Talk quotes him questioning the wisdom in teaching children both creationism and the theory of evolution.

"The present system of teaching in schools permits the following absurdity: at 10 a.m. the pupils attend a lesson on the catechism, at which the creation of the world is presented to them in accordance with the teachings of the Bible; and at 11 a.m. they attend a lesson in natural science, at which they are taught the theory of evolution. Yet the two doctrines are in complete contradiction! As a child, I suffered from this contradiction, and ran my head against a wall. Often I complained to one or another of my teachers against what I had been taught an hour before — and I remember that I drove them to despair. Hitler on Religion "

    8. In 1929 Mussolini signed the Lateran Treaty with Pope Pius XI. This established Catholicism as the official religion of the State, gave the Pope increased political powers, gave papal sovereignty to Vatican City, ensured that the Catholic religion would be taught in all schools, compensated the Pope with $90 million for the loss of papal property since 1870, and cemented broad Catholic support for Mussolini.

    9. The Great Scandal: Christianity's Role in the Rise of the Nazis by Gregory S. Paul The Concordat, signed on July 20, 1933, was a classic POLITICAL KICKBACK SCHEME. The Catholic church supported the new dictatorship by endorsing the end of democracy and free speech. In addition it bound its bishops to Hitler’s Reich by means of a loyalty oath and in exchange for supporting Hitler the Catholic church received enormous 1.) tax income and 2.) protection for church privileges. 3.) Religious instruction and prayer in school were reinstated. 4.) Criticism of the church was forbidden. Page 11.

    10. The first concentration camp in Germany was Dachau, which opened in 1933. The primary prisoners of the Dachau camp were Communists, Social Democrats, and atheists. The first camps were essentially for "enemies of the State". Over time Gypsies, homosexuals, and dissenting clergymen were sent to Dachau as well.

The Nazis advocated “Muscular Christianity,” as opposed to “Feminized Christianity” that portrayed Jesus as “a woman with a beard.” This same sect of Christianity is active in America today.

It's evident that you hate Jesus and Christianity. Why? Is it the "do unto others" and "pray for those that persecute you", etc., that you despise?

Not sure why you think Kyklos hates Jesus for saying religion is fascism in disguise ?

You then make this wierd conflation of Jesus to Christian. Christian platforms were horribly anti Jesus "anti -Christ"

Perhaps the aformentioned fasist regimes were "anti Jesus" as well ... but they definitely had a few Christian platforms - including persecution of Jews - persecution of the people in general -

"A fire broke out backstage in a theater. The clown came out to warn the public; they thought it was a joke and applauded. He repeated it; the acclaim was even greater. I think that's just how the world will come to an end: to general applause from those who believe it's just a joke.”--

    ??

The problem is that those of certain religions use their religion as justification for aggressively sociopathic behavior.

Are you really interested in supporting the World Peace and Unification Sanctuary? Do you believe Jesus would join up?

Christianity needs to be seriously reformed in its attitude toward those who don't share their faith in detail.

To be fair, Christianity has for the most part been tamed and secularized. Islam is the bigger threat to the world now. And even Islam is well on its way to being tamed in many parts of the world (see Indonesia).

I don't think that is fair - despite my having an imense hatred for Islamists. Thing is .. not all Muslims are Islamists - and of the Islamists - not all are the Saudi inspired kind - which is the main threat. - Al Qaeda - ISIS - TAliban - Islamic Front - Boko Haram - Al Shabaab - the nutjobs India - Pakistan - and the various soviet and ex soviet Stans.

The problem with an Islamist is that - they have no respect for essential liberty - the "founding principle - hence why we should not let them in -but that is another matter.

They wish to force religious beliefs on others through physical violence "Law" Sharia in this case .. which is the root of all evil.

Why it is not fair .. is because the Religious Right also wants to firce religious belief on others through physical violence "Law"

Now in the grand scheme of things .. US -- the Christian Nation - promoting freedom and liberty supposedly -- spent the last 20 years turning previously secular nations into Jihadist Vunderland .. of the El Saud Style.

Texas Christian radio host William Neil "Doc" Gallagher gets three life sentences for massive Ponzi scheme that targeted seniors.
"The sentencing came after more than a dozen senior victims testified during a three-hour court hearing about losing anywhere from $50,000 to $600,000 invested in the Gallagher Financial Group. Some said they had to sell their homes, borrow money from their children or take part-time jobs to supplement their Social Security benefits...He ruthlessly stole from his clients who trusted him for almost a decade. He amassed $32 million in loss to all of his clients and exploited many elder individuals."

Paul Tillich: "The Courage to Be."

Paul Tillich presents his antidote to meaninglessness through the concept of courage to be. He was a German-American Christian existentialist philosopher born in 1886 and is considered as one of the most influential theologians of the 20th century. Here is a brief introductory summary of Tillich's book, "The Courage to Be,"(1952) (pdf.)

Theologian Paul Tillich was a Chaplin assigned to the Fourth Artillery Regiment of the Seventh Reserve Division in the German Army during WWI and at one time met with a high level brigadier general. "His Excellency" from Berlin had strong opinions about church authority and the power of prayer. The General boldly stated that he believed that prayer could protect a soldier from enemy fire in battle.

Paul Tillich was in the Battle of Verdun in 1916 lasting about ten months in which 163,000 soldiers were killed and 216,000 persons wounded. Many times Tillich had to dig the graves of his friends, and soldiers he had counseled. He had at least two nervous breakdowns, but was sent back to the front after he recovered each time. This experience traumatized Tillich for the rest of his life.

Tillich told the brigadier general NO! Intensely disagreeing with the general.

The General was outraged that a minister of the church would deny his claim of supernatural protection. Tillich was
immediately transferred to the Fourth Artillery Regiment to the Sanitation Company of the Seventh Division (Source: Paul Tillich: His Life and Thought (1976), Harper & Row, p. 50).

At 14 minutes, 20 seconds in the video the narrator wasn't clear on the topic of demythologization so here are some textual references by Tillich for clarification.

Paul Tillich writes about “demythologization” and “deliteralization” in his three volume Systematic Theology. Here are the significant references, but the last quote is a good summary of his view that distinguishes two meanings of demythologization.

Paul Tillich, Systematic Theology, vols. 1,2,3 (pdf complete three volumes):
    Vol. 1, p. 29,
    Vol. 2, p. 102, 112, 152*.
    Vol. 3, p. 15, 115, 142, 339, 415.

“These symbols must be understood as symbols, and they lose their meaning if taken literally. In dealing with the christological symbols, we were engaged not in a “demythologization” but in a “deliteralization.” We tried to affirm and to intercept them as symbols. “Demythologization” can mean two things, and the failure to distinguish between them has led to the confusion which characterizes the discussion. It can mean the fight against the literalistic distortion of symbols and myths. This is a necessary task of Christian theology. It keeps Christianity from falling into a wave of superstitious “objectivations” of the holy. But demythologization can also mean the removal of myth as a vehicle of religious expression and the substitution of science and morals. In this sense demythologization must be strongly rejected. It would deprive religion of its language; it would silence the experience of the holy. Symbols and myths cannot be criticized simply because they are symbols (Systematic Theology: Vol. 2, p. 152).”

The Demonology of the Shakespearean play, Macbeth.

The first scene of Macbeth and the Three Witches.

The story of Macbeth begins on a fresh battlefield where vultures, and maybe crows, gather to pick tasty bits of flesh from the rotting bodies of dead soldiers--the spoils of war. What is implied is a demon enters one of the birds feeding on the corpses, and then appears the first witch, the Prophesier. She lies on the ground like a resting crow when the film begins, and the other two witches de-sublimate within her mind, and she begins to speak with her two demonic sisters, "Where have you been sister?" And one of the sister answers, "Killing swine," meaning starting wars of greed and power all over the earth.

The possessed Prophesier tells her sister, "I want to show you something..." the demon sister immediately demands, "Show me! Show me!" and like a bird, the Prophesier lifts up her left foot proudly holding the amputated thumb of a sailor of fortune--a tasty battlefield carrion snack.

*Within mythic thought everything, like pain or fear, are transferable substances based on symbolic substitution. The Prophesier is not pretending to be an allegorical crow, but is a crow.

The demons now hear a drum and sense the Thane (a royal official) from the city of Glamis, Macbeth, is coming. The Three Demons prepare their plan for Macbeth--to stimulate his greed and lust for power so that he destroys himself. These only demons can only suggest, possessed humans have agency of action.

"Like a sieve as a sail (a sail that holds no wind), and like a rat without a tail (rats need a tail for balance to climb), I'll do, I'll do, and I'll do. I will drain him dry as hay! Sleep! Neither night nor day (from a restless conscience) hanging on his penthouse lid, he shall live a man-- FORBID! Weary tonight…nine times nine (counting her victim's sleepless nights)...Squawking, squawking...."

The Third Witch becomes a crow, howling, shaking, and flapping her wings! The demon crow Prophesier drapes herself in a robe: the required demonic ritual charms have been said. Rite comes before myth. These three sisters, imperfect speakers as they are, wait for Macbeth to tell him their strange intelligence, or mythical intuition. The demon possessed Witches of Macbeth always tell the truth, but greed blinds the hearer and they misinterpret reality.

“It is a dreadful saying that the gods blind those whom they want to ruin…but who are these gods? They are the evil instincts that are in every nation with whose help the Nazis came to power…God opens the eyes of those whom he wants to save, however terrible this awakening may be.”-- “Against The Third Reich,” Paul Tillich’s Wartime Addresses to Nazi Germany 1942 to D-Day 1944 (pdf.) p.149, passim.

Shakespeare wrote his play "Macbeth" from reading the political scandals of his times that actually happened and King James I, praised him for the play in 1606 A.D.. On the other hand, the Shakespearean actor Orson Welles did the same in his film "CitizenKane" (1941), but William Randolph Hearst and the U.S. government blacklisted him until his death.

Since American Christians hate Jesus so much and embrace Christian Nationalism instead, Macbeth is a good myth to re-tell in this time of Empire War Fever.
