Ahhh Good Ol' Don, gold prospector and heck of a nice guy. He was well into his 70s when he was here and his Congolese handler kept trying to take all pleasure from him because of a stroke and medication. Myself and others though were happy to let him live what life he had left as he wished and enjoyed. He liked going into the bush. He liked giving things to the villagers from food and candy for the kids to repairing a ferry and surrounding a field with electric wire to protect it from cattle. I tell you they were dancing in the streets when he came around and he always had a big smile relating the stories. He liked a bottle or two of wine with friends. I liked being counted as a friend.
He sounds a nice bloke. Fossickers and miners can be a mixed bag. I’m glad he was a good one. Australian mining companies don’t all enjoy good reputations.
