I can't see what the other poster posted but wanted to point out, despite not being related to the event over the weekend, there are very little left of the convicts originally brought here, as the influence of migrants since then have overtaken Australian culture, especially in the major cities. I believe it will change again, as we are now seeing an influx of Indian and Chinese migrants.

Yes, Australia was founded by criminals while America was founded by theists.

Given what theists have become in America today I suspect we would have been better off with the criminals instead even though it pains me as an American to admit it.

My Dad's side of the family were First Fleet and had a few other convicts in the mix. Mum's side were free settlers who arrived in Sth Australia within 10 years of the colony starting. There is no difference between them.

Oh, that 'Tele' headline reminds me why I dodge the Murdoch press. With only 4.7% of Sydney's population Chinese there is no way it is even close to being true. Typical Murdoch subbies work, however.

If you wish to immigrate to Sweden, become Swedish appreciating first.

And that reflects on Australia too. And their culture, such as it may be defined.

I believe in Sweden it is Lutefisk. For the Dutch, eating a whole herring, head, guts, to the tail.
They used that ability to distinguish German spies from Dutch in WW2.

The 'unique character of Australia' is the result of foreign immigrants such as my own family. Some of them were the 'wrong' ethnicity or the 'wrong' religion & were looked upon with suspicion & often derision by the self-appointed guardians of society. Had those people had their way we would have recreated the British aristocracy & class system and been a poorer place in every imaginable way for it.

No idea what this has to do with rain, but pretty much par for the course with you it seems.

 

I think I should probably come clean at this point and mention that I am one of those despicable foreign migrants diluting the unique character of Australia. I will also offer my sincere apologies to all the Australians in the thread... I'm so sorry peeps... please forgive me...

 

About 1/3 of the first fleet convicts came from non English speaking countries and there was also 20 or so Americans
