Yeah, could just imagine the relentless in ya face cajoling that would be quite frustrating but could Barnacles have handled the situation differently?

Barnaby on the rampage, the thing is... it's this same characteristic (Trumpiness) that makes him appealing to many (or rather ..some) Australian voters lol

I'm not sure how. He's not mega rich or has had any other influence or notability outside politics. I think people in the states have known of the trump for many years. The yanks seem to worship the rich and famous. We do too but not to the extent that they do.

I blame the gay marriage. People like Barnaby have been telling us how it will destroy traditional marriage....and they were right!

It's all Labor's fault, putting the government under such scrutiny and pressure. It is all about the citizenship crisis, he was proving he is an Aussie. Gud On Ya. Up the ol' red rooster and all that.

You could be right, this could be the breakdown of the traditional marriage. I would say his was pretty traditional, missionary style every birthday and new year.

I wonder how conservative his constituents are? Will this affect his popularity? The national party hero who'll stand up against those evil greenies who just want to stop farmers using all the water they want has feet of clay!

Apparently this got a decent airing during the byelection. Tony Windsor tweeted about it and others talked about it. Perhaps if it had been a big news story and there had been a credible alternative candidate he might have had to work a bit harder for the win, but I seriously doubt he would have lost.

Socially conservative voters have proved to be remarkably flexible on 'moral' issues. Polling taken in the US about a decade ago showed evangelical voters were the most concerned with the personal morality of Presidential candidates by a pretty wide margin (70% ish). Similar polling done late last year showed a complete reversal, with similar percentages saying it no longer mattered. I think the reason why is obvious.

I grew up in Tim Fischer's seat. The attachment there was almost tribal. He was 'one of them'. He hated/attacked the right people and just as importantly, brought home the bacon....in epic quantities. I was up there last eyar & drove over the 'Tim Fischer Bridge' up near Corowa. Government spending is bad....except in Nat electorates. That is how the Nats operate. They can be vulnerable to challenge from local independents, but it would take a bit more than rooting the help to blast out someone like Barnaby.

    Nothing new here.

Bill Shorten, Tony Burke, and Nick McKim conspicuosly silent.

Joyce is a fool, but the breakdown of his personal life is his business. I find it ironic that none of you have discussed the names above with the same vigour. Not to mention the Lefties icon, Bob Hawke.

Perhaps people are more intrigued by the fact that at least two women desired to sleep with him, moreso than the act of adultery.

I think a lot of the reaction has to do with his hypocrisy about SSM. Some of his arguments were totally loopy and his own behaviour puts the lie to what he said. I'm not condemning him for leaving his wife for another woman, that really is his business, but the hypocrisy is what annoys me about this.

Exacts Dur. He was raving and ranting about how gay marriage would be the end of the traditional marriage ... Well, rooting one's secretary isn't the best thing for them either.

As I said, he is a fool.

Unfortunately for all of us it seems he is not Robinson Crusoe, the parliament is full of them.

I think as Diu said it is the stand the Nationals took against SSM.
Always trying to protect old outdated values, which you will find more on the right side of the fence. Ups, can't wait until this one gets up someones nose again....
That any bloke can't keep his zip closed however is not new, all you need is the seduction (or willingness) by a younger woman.

Trying to find a statesman, a true representative of their electorate, democracy itself is impossible today. We cannot continue to survive in the "Capitalist" system that has evolved since WW2.

The post WW2 system was awesome for us in the West. The post Reagan/Thatcher system less so. That said, life is still pretty good in places like Australia - much better than we tell ourselves. The adoption of capitalist ideas in China has seen the single largest uplift of people out of poverty in a single generation in human history.

Capitalism is incredibly successful & incredibly adaptable. Tempered with effective oversight & regulation it is the single most effective way to deliver prosperity to people. Maybe one day someone will work out a better alternative, but the ones tried thus far have been much. much worse.

Agree but it does depend on continued growth. Something has gone wrong in Aust as we never used to have beggars or homeless people sleeping on the footpaths of major streets in our capitals. Was it drugs after the sixties, the closing of mental hospitals, user pays, social welfare cuts... the list is large and possibly it's just a combination of all of them plus greed.

It is certainly greed, but not just some fat cat sitting in a board room. It is the greed of people who want lower taxes and higher spending on things like private schools, health insurance subsidies & other 'middle class welfare'. What gets cut is services for those who are on the fringes or don't have a powerful lobby. Thus we end up with more homeless.

Continued growth is hardly an issue.
