The Pentagon is reportedly open to the possibility of sending more American troops to Iraq in an expanded NATO training mission for Iraqi security forces. ~ snip ~

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said Thursday that NATO’s presence for the mission would jump from about 500 personnel to around 4,000, CNN reported. Austin reportedly “welcomed the expanded role” of NATO in Iraq, ~ snip ~

An increase in American involvement in Iraq would be a change in direction from policy under former President Donald Trump. Troop levels in the country fell to 2,500 by the end of Trump’s term.

    https://dailycaller.com/2021/02/19/...dle-east-pentagn-lloyd-austin-troop-increase/

And this, folks, is why I'll take substance over style any day of the week.

And this is also why I'll take "America first" over "NATO first" any day of the week too.

If those NATO countries think this is such a good idea, how about if the U.S. withdraws all its forces from Iraq and lets those Europeans take over the mission?

I don't remember Joe Biden running on a platform of increasing the number of U.S. troops in Iraq, which means that if he does it, it will be his first big lie ... of omission.

Establishment, either Republican or Democrat, is going to get us into another conflict with no goal in mind.

Sure, they need something to do, like train, which is what they are doing now. Its expensive, so its pretty much the opposite of making money.

Very naive post. US Foreign policy does not change with whoever is in government. How can there be 2500 US troops in Iraq as was it not reported many many times that Trump had brought all US troops home..............

This drawdown was started in 2020 before the election. Trump didn’t like these endless wars and was trying to extricate us from them.

    https://www.npr.org/2020/09/09/9110...l-cut-number-of-troops-in-iraq-by-nearly-half

I do NOT want Biden increasing troops in Iraq.

If the Europeans want to deploy to Iraq, that’s their business. But I want our troops out.

So why were the US troop numbers in Saudi Arabia increased. No troops came home, they are just moved around to convince the gullible that troops are being brought home

no one likes these endless wars, Bush got us into them and now it's like holding a tiger by the tail, whoever lets go will get bit

that is why Obama did not end them, Trump did not end them and now Biden is in the same boat

yes, it's ugly when we let go, doing it days before kicking the can was low of Trump

It pretty much ended about 12 years ago when Obama reduced the troop levels from 100 000 to about 10 000 and for 8 years we heard what a huge mistake that was. Then in 2017 we started hearing how Obama was actually a war hawk and Trump was a peace-dove who wanted to end a war, which was already ended. Sure, there were still US special forces there helping the Iraqis push ISIS out of the country (which they did).

Not Bush! Clinton was the first to illegally invade another nation and go against the UN charter. He helped break up Yugoslavia and then Serbia. He referred to it as a successful war, since Americans weren't killed only Serb civilians - and who cares about them anyway. Right!

Well the Russian's cared. It was a wake up call for Vladimir Putin, that why they began building up their armed forces.

yep, since then everyone has left just enough troops there to keep it from going to hell

no one can pull all the troops out or they get blamed for what happens after

even Trump claimed he was gonna do it and did not

It would help if everyone made more use of the UN, and agreed to strengthen the institution of international law.

How does a 2 month air campaign in Serbia translate to an "endless war"?

Yeah and we helped Iraq by bombing Mosul and telling the civilians not to leave, because we had precision bombs. No one knows how many thousands of civilians were killed, but they say the stench lasted for more than 6 months. Next came Raqqa in Syria, which we bombed off the face of the earth.

Well if there is justice, which I'm sure there is, I hope it impacts those who committed the crimes, and not the Americans who had no idea what we were doing - thanks to the media cover ups.

As for pushing ISIS out of Iraq, yeah they pushed them into Syria or wherever they felt they would benefit our agenda of keeping the war going on and on and on.

I didn't say breaking up Yugoslavia was an endless war. But it was the beginning of our illegal wars, and that was started by Clinton. Later on the same war mongers from the Clinton administration, entered and influenced the Bush administration. Even the Head of the CIA Tenet, was a carryover from the Clinton administration.

I don't want troops in Syria. I want the US to leave those people alone and in peace - and to give them back their oil wells so they can rebuild their country as well as repay Iran so they will get up and leave. As for the Kurds, Assad will settle them, and as for the Turks, Russia can handle them.

Can you define an 'illegal war" for us? Serbia was a NATO campaign.

I want us out of Syria, but I would prefer to see the various players all come to the table and hammer out a peace. Russia, Syria, Turkey, U.S., and the Kurds. The Kurds should withdraw to their traditional areas. They should commit to not supporting terroristic activities in Turkey. Turkey should leave the Syrian Kurds alone - no incursions into Syria, no bombing or shelling. Syria should commit to no persecution of the Kurds. The Syrian military should stay out of Kurdish areas, although civilian representatives of the government should be allowed. The U.S. should recognize the Assad government as the legitimate government of Syria. The U.S. would commit to no support for the overthrow of the Assad government, and a withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Syrian territory. We don't have to especially like Assad, but it is preferable to Al-Qaeda/ISIS aligned rebel groups.

Everybody gives something. Everybody gets something. The war comes to an end.

Practically nothing changes no matter who is in government. Representatives have delegated all their power to the executive bureaucracy, who are entrenched and don't change that much over the years.
