yes, they wont be happy that they have to pay taxes to pay off those tax cuts for the rich if the rich don't pay their taxes, who does.... the next generation
That's cute, but the association of tax cuts for the rich, which I do not support, is not a constant in Republican platforms. During the eight years of the Eisenhower presidency, from 1953 to 1961, the top marginal rate was 91 percent. Eisenhower was a Republican, of course. Cuts to those rates were championed by and enacted under JFK, a Democrat. Anyway, it's cultural issues that turn people against Democrats as much as tax policy. Teaching gender studies to kindergarteners and defunding the police because black lives matter, you know?
Me either. And probably they would not vote for Trump, except for working class milennials who didn"t study liberal arts on the East Coast and in the Pacific NW. There are quite a few of those. And they vote even if MSNBC doesn't cover them. Anyway, Trump and Republicanism are not synonymous. Personally I'd take Rubio, Haley, Thune, Christie or Romney over Trump.
C’mon. You aren’t factoring in the insane number of allowable deductions under that 90% rate. Nobody paid that much, which is why JFK tackled the behemoth.
You underestimate the democrats willingness to pass anything that might help them with Biden tied around their neck like an anchor going into the general election
The stalwarts in the party are not the crazies getting headlines on CNN. And they don't include Trump. In germ, Republicans (including Cruz) are the same as ever, as Democrats are the same as ever. Think Christie, Thune, Graham, McConnell, Nikki Haley and Romney. Trump is an aberration, a charismatic outlier, and when he recedes from the scene, the party will become center right again, in practice. Same with Bernie Sanders on the other end. Nothing ever changes. On edit, here's an example of what I mean: In December 2017, Thune was one of six senators to sign a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer requesting their "help in ensuring the long-term sustainability of the 340B program", a Trump administration rule mandating that drug companies give discounts to health-care organizations presently serving large numbers of low-income patients. This is the kind of boring but philosophically telling story that never makes headlines, because CNN doesn't have time or financial incentive to cover Stormy Daniels, Russian collusion and "the 340B program." Boring!
yet those people would be very very against even going back to the tax rates for the rich under Reagan
If all you meant by "today's Republicans" is that they are all too averse to income taxes on the rich, I won't argue. And to tell the truth, I don't really understand it. No Republican is going to defect to the Democratic Party over tax policy.
