Re-read the headline please. They're right he wasn't a "grand wizard", he was a “exalted cyclops” or recruiter bringing others into the Klan. Technically the articles title is correct but quite deceptive. They know a large number of people simply scan the headlines, that one would give the mistaken impression that Biden didn't eulogize former KKK member. Both a "grand wizard" and an “exalted cyclops” were high level council members and Joe Biden did eulogize at one's funeral. For the AP to differentiate between the two to create the notion as though the event never happened is journalistic malfeasance in my opinion.

Just imagine how the AP would have acted if Trump has eulogized at the funeral of someone that once said that, no matter how many years ago.

He did speak at the funeral and seemed to think he was a great man. I saw the clip.

I wonder if BLM are tearing down things named after Byrd in West Virginia? I can't find a single instance.

I'll never understand the hatred Trumpists have for someone who USED to be a KKK member and THEN fought against them. Calling Byrd a KKK member is like calling Trump a Clinton-supporting Democrat. I mean . . . he USED to be. And, hey, how dare Christians revere the writings of Paul! Paul PERSECUTED Christians! The Trumpist ability to pretend to not understand past tense continues to astound me.

Don't believe your lyin' eyes, believe the AP instead!

I admit, this "factcheck" is a great piece of agitprop. I guess they are learning something at those J schools.

Like this -----> ? As a young man, Mr. Byrd was an ‘exalted cyclops’ of the Ku Klux Klan. Although he apologized numerous times for what he considered a youthful indiscretion, his early votes in Congress--notably a filibuster against the 1964 Civil Rights Act--reflected racially separatist views.

    Or like this ----- > ?

The point here is not that Byrd ended his life as a closeted racist--I never met the man--but that, because he was a Democrat, the people who make judgments about what is and what is not newsworthy chose to give him a pass, failing to subject him to a thorough discussion of his past each time he said or did something that might have alluded to it. This was obviously the case after he used the phrase “white ******s” in a television interview on the subject of race relations in the United States during the Bush presidency--at just about the same time Mississippi Republican Trent Lott was being driven from the Senate leadership in a never-ending barrage of criticism following an unfortunate but provocative comment he made at a birthday party for Sen. Strom Thurmond, the one-time Dixiecrat candidate for president of the United States. One can only imagine what the consequences would have been for Byrd’s career had he been a Republican with a similar record.

Byrd filibustered against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 . . . and then went on to change tracks and support subsequent Civil Rights efforts, to the extent that he was praised by the NAACP in his obituary.

He repeatedly spoke out against them and then supported the civil rights efforts that they opposed.

Strom Thurman lost his bid for President to Harry S Truman, another Democrat KKK Klansman. At least Strom Thurman was never in the Klan. But Trent Lott lost his Republican Leader job over such a small thing. Giving an old dying man a compliment.

You can start here if you want. Honestly, I'm exhausted of this. I constantly refute the alt right and all they can do is demand that I do their homework for them, never producing anything of their own. Read if you want. Refuse to read like all the rest if you want. I don't tutor the alt right for free anymore. Do your own damn homework. Your failure to produce evidence for your claims places not obligation on me to produce evidence to refute your baseless claims. Here's your only freebie: https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcast...5-did-robert-byrd-really-change-his-mind-race

LOL, you brand me as "alt right"? You made the claim, how DARE I ask you to back it up....the "outrage" I tell you! YOUR claim, is not MY "homework" And your link hardly backs your claim, no wonder you did not offer any quotes, in fact your own link cast shade on your claim, did you even read it yourself?

I produced my own link far before yours, you see I researched your bogus claim. You "refuted" nothing. Care to explain why you smear me as "alt right"? You could not "tutor" me in a wild dream. I produced evidence far more than your lame attempt. Maybe look up "onus" while you are at it.

Your link only expresses his "regret" his past membership was a political mistake, nothing more

Yes, it’s true that Biden did not eulogize a pastt KKK Grand Wizard. Robert Byrd was a former Grand Cyclopes of the KKK. There’s a huge difference between the two.

And Strom Thurmond USED to be but how many times do we hear the left defending the Democrats who gave a home to the segregationist and racist by scream "LOOK THURMOND SWITCHED TO THE REPUBLICANS and that proves it was the REPUBLICAN who were the racist". And Thurmond was never a high official in the KKK.

"Klan – the basic unit of the Second Era KKK was known simply as a Klan. Its area of jurisdiction was a Klanton (from "canton") which was defined as "extend[ing] in all directions to a distance midway between the location of the Klan and the nearest Klan thereto" unless otherwise directed by the Grand Dragon or Imperial Wizard. The chief officer of a Klan was an Exalted Cyclops and the subordinate officers were known as the Twelve Terrors"

Oh well that's better and makes it OK
