Black vs. White: Graduation Rates of Tourney Teams

This discussion was held on ESPN First Take. They are discussing the results of the GSR (Graduation Success Rate) of NCAA Tournament Teams found in the following study.

Basically, white students graduate at a higher clip than black students.

HOWEVER, Stephen A Smith makes a good point, as some of it is due to socioeconomic factors. College athletes from a broken home are more likely to jump to professional leagues ASAP to finally get a decent paycheck. The early departure rules currently allow this, and schools are milking it more than ever.

That is the title from ESPN First Take. Apologies for the typo.

 

Who cares? More black students make it to the NBA, than whites -- no doubt because of "socioeconomic factors"... But you don't see the media causing an uproar over this.

Is it possible more whites make it to college and graduate because of "raw ability"? Why is it ok to assume blacks just make better athletes than whites on the basketball court because of genetics, but we can't suspect even for a second that it works that way with whites in academics?

 

A whole lot of this is just more media gibberish. The fact of our society is that it consists of all cultures, and it will continue that way. We've had this basic info for a very long time. Let's dedicate attention to really making a difference for the better, rather than feeding the racial flames. This is like the person who calls a friend on the phone to complain about all of the things that they haven't accomplished today. Get off of it. Take a shower. Take care of business.

 

More whites graduate -- but blacks make more money. So who's the more stupid?

 

Well obviously blacks come from single parent homes with low income more often, which IMO explains the bulk of lower grades, higher arrest ratios, etc... Often time whites in the same economic standing will have similar problems. This is becoming even more so today with the rise in single parent households.

Still, I agree with your post. I don't think athletes should be allowed to leave early. Either skip college and go to minor leagues / international leagues, or stay all four years and graduate. My two cents.

No, it is not possible, because academic success is 100% cultural. The most successful demographic in college is actually immigrant blacks. Surprise?

You do realize that Whites and Asians outscore blacks and Hispanics on every IQ test......right?

 

Blacks have higher concentrations of fast twitch muscle fibers, which explain dominance in activities that require these muscles (sprinting, jumping). This is a documented physiological difference. All who have broken the 10 second barrier of 100m have been of African ancestry.

You know, if you went to college, you would have noticed this. I'm not surprised at all. Most blacks in non-historically black colleges are Caribbean or African immigrants.

 

Whites are afforded no advantage, in anything. If there is an advantage, it's because they stole it or benefited from racism in some way.

Whites are afforded the advantage of being white. It is called white privilege. Unlike a minority, you can walk the earth being your own person isolated from your race. When a minority does anything, he is doing so representative of his entire ethnic group.. especially in the mind of bigots.

I doubt very much your claim that intelligence is 100% cultural between groups. It's no surprise that you couldn't substantiate that claim even though I asked you to.

Simply attending college means little. You claimed they were the most successful group in college. How does simply putting an ass in a school chair equate to success? Many of these immigrants have to be in school in order to legally be in the country.

And how do you explain that "IQ tests" (hardly a credible evaluation) have had their average score increase over time? Humans haven't genetically become more intelligent.

How do you explain the difference between immigrant Black academic achievement surpassing ALL native-born races, including East Asians?

Tell me more about this illusive 'White privilege"...........I am White and over 50 years old and haven't experienced it........I've worked for everything I have and nobody never gave me anything........

 

They've risen and the gaps between groups remain. Whites could practice on the basketball court and get better at the sport, but they probably won't be as good as the genetically superior blacks on the court.

I already did. Simply attending college doesn't equate to academic success and achievement, especially considering many of these people would not be allowed in the country if they weren't in school.

There was nothing of substance to dodge, you're just proving my point. Even though whites have achieved more in this country than any other group, self-loathing whites chock it all up as exploitation and racism. That's the sick worldview you guys have. We all know it. You don't have to demonstrate it anymore.

 

You have privilege every day you walk outside in American society. You are just ignorant of it. You don't deal with the same stereotypes minorities deal with.
