Well they have a point. Not only would it attract more white people (there goes the neighborhood!) but the exact wrong sort of white people: hipsters. I know I don't want their kind in these here parts.

there were no plantations in Oregon, the blacks came there from another state which means whites made room for them. ironic.

From the article in the OP:

I wouldn't scam taxpayers by making them eat a $2.4 million subsidy for a crappy little retail store either. Portland could open their own version of a Trader Joe's for less than that. Doesn't sound like 'economic development', more like corporate welfare.

    - - - Updated - - -

No one can argue with that. I pay the neighborhood kids to hide in the bushes and shoot pellet guns at them when they walk down my street.

    Corporate welfare is wrong.
Racism, even Black on White racism is wrong.

Black culture has failed to mainstream to the Middle Class.
Maybe forced Trader Joe's on current Black culture would be a good thing.
More unsalted almonds at a good price.

Not welfare communities, apparently. Trader Joe's must be too spendy for food stamps or something.

Even wlefare communities. Trader Joes brings jobs to those on welfare to have to get off welfare. Creates income and revenues for the community and can lessen welfare in that community.

Actually I have to change my view on this now because I wouldn't wish an increase in hipsters on anyone. That is just cruel.

Well, there's one problem. People on welfare aren't always in a hurry to get off of it and work for a living :D

Well let the lot sit empty for ten more years. That will certainly greatly benefit the African American Community in Portland.

Here is a dumb idea that really isn't on topic but not worth opening a thread for.
In these places that have been hit hard like Detroit or others. There are vacant lots all over or homes the banks took over that are just rotting. Why not turn these lots into community gardens. I'm sure seed companies would even help donating some seeds. But get people out the house. Moving. Working. Give them something to look forward to. Let them plant and grow their own food. Get kids away from the TVs. Let them experience the pride of actually growing something. Everyone that would want to join would get their own little area to grow and tend to whatever they want. It would get neighbors outside and talking to one another. It would give veterans something to be proud of. Help with the shock of coming home. Wouldn't cost the tax payers a dime. Hell there are places like lowes and others that would help. The city is just sitting on these vacant lots. Let the people experience the joy of growing something they could put on a plate that isn't some fast food crap.

so because property values may increase in the area, we should stop progress? Increase in value will be good for the community, as the poor that already have these low income homes will now be able to sell at a higher price and increase their living standards

That average Trader Joe's store has 90 employees, the store would have collected sales tax for the city, it would have brought in satellite businesses that would have created jobs and collected sales taxes. And no cities don't run grocery stores and no the city could not have purchased the food for the same pricing as Trader Joe's so it would have been more expensive food. TJ's would have brought in good foods at good prices, remember the leftist claims that the reason the poor in this country eat themselves to death is because they don't have access to good nutritious foods at reasonable cost.

I hear the local black leader on the Medved show today, his entire reasoning for this was absurd and full of folly. Guess what now they have nothing. It was either the city make TJ's build housing on top of the store or no store at all. They oppose it on the unproven claim it would have driven up the property values of the entire neighborhood forcing some people to move, the "oppressed" people who could have gotten jobs there. So they don't want whites to move in, the unoppressed people. What total ignorance and what a shame this mentality leads this group of "depressed" people and works to deny them opportunity because they can't get a piece of the action or as he put it "throw them a bone".

If they don't want to attract too many whites, they could put up a Mac Donald's.
    Enjoy!

Blacks used to get beaten twice a year if they lived in Oregon as an incentive to make them leave the territory. The liberals thought that was a little overboard and made them do forced labor instead of getting a lashing twice a year.

And then it became unlawful for blacks to even live in Oregon. And then the State passed a $5 annual tax that they had to pay or else they would be forced to work it off at fifty cents a day doing road work.

As bad as the South was it was more friendly to blacks than Oregon was. The old fire and the frying pan comparison.

So maybe the current Portland blacks have reason to be wary of things going on in their neighborhoods.

True story - I used to do new product development for AT&T. We came up with a new service, and, as one of the last chores before market release, ran the idea past an "advisory council" of "representatives" of various minorities. The group included a Roman Catholic priest and leaders of black, Hispanic, gay, and women's groups. It existed to make sure the "interests" of these groups were defended. After I described the new service, the Hispanic "representative" said "his people" wouldn't like it. I replied - and I thought this was a reasonable statement of the obvious - that there was nothing compelling them to buy it, so they just shouldn't buy. I still recall the horrified incredulity around the table. It seems that no product should reach market at all unless every officially recognized minority group certifies that they would love it. The External Affairs guy heading the meeting had to excuse my ignorant offense to the gathering.

I still wonder what made the personal opinions of these few self-elected people the voice of millions, and why they thought AT&T should suck up to them. Also, what about the many minorities who don't figure in the Democratic Party? This is the reality most people don't know. A few self-appointed "representatives" have become bullies and extortionists. They don't really represent their communities. They're just in it for money and power. By doing what they do, they take away freedom and opportunity from those they supposedly represent. Hispanic people (for example) should decide for themselves whether they want to buy something, not have their choice preempted.

I'd guess that similar "representatives" are fighting Trader Joe's. If the local community doesn't like the store, they don't have to shop there. If they don't, it's unlikely the store will succeed. Trader Joe's management wouldn't put a store in a hostile neighborhood in the hope that people from other communities will come to it. That makes no sense at all, but no one ever accused "community organizers" of understanding business.

A bunch of part time jobs that nobody would be able to live on.

If Trader Joe's is such a wonderful deal then it doesn't a $2.4 million government subsidy then.

Oregon doesn't collect sales taxes, in case anybody doesn't know that. At leas they didn't when I lived there last in the late 1990's.

Boy, the Council of Concerned Citizens is quite the racist rag.

Clueless on purpose, or do they come by it honestly?
