How can you sit there with a straight face and say these boat people are doing nothing wrong when they know and engage in criminal activity by hiring criminals to illegally smuggle them into a foreign country?

They have already came to Australia under false pretenses, so just how would you like us to help them further - free drug taking with prosecution perhaps?

They are not arriving here illegally, are they? The majority of actual illegals arrive here by PLANE - yet you never hear the Liberals or Bolt mentioning that, do you?

It appears AU does: Australia provides protection for asylum seekers who meet the United Nations definition of a refugee, as defined in the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees and its 1967 Protocol (Refugees Convention).

But what exactly is a refugee:

An asylum seeker is a person who has fled their own country and applies to the government of another country for protection as a refugee.

According to the United Nations Convention and Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees (the Refugee Convention), a refugee is a person who is outside their own country and is unable or unwilling to return due to a well-founded fear of being persecuted because of their:

    race
    religion
    nationality
membership of a particular social group
    political opinion.
    http://www.hreoc.gov.au/human_rights/immigration/asylum_seekers.html

Do each and every person seeking asylum fit within this criteria. What should be done with those that do not fit within that criteria.

    1. Employing the services of a people smuggler does not disqualify one from seeking asylum. They are still legitimate asylum seekers.

    2. The majority are not coming "under false pretenses": most of them are granted genuine refugee status.

Let's stick to the facts, shall we?

Those that don't fit the critera should be considered also, who is to say that someone is not fleeing for a genuine reason we don't recognise?

Not each and every one, no.

    However:

"Past figures show that between 70 and 97 per cent of asylum seekers arriving by boat at different times have been found to be refugees and granted protection either in Australia or in another country."

"According to the Refugee Council of Australia, in 1998–99, approximately 97 per cent of Iraqi and 92 per cent of Afghan applicants (the majority of whom would have arrived by boat) were granted refugee status and given permanent protection visas"

Then that should be included in the list of factors. Otherwise there is a system potentially out of control. Are these people sent back? I remember reading about this the last time I was there in July.

Thank you UM....They are provided the following:

The Australian Government administers programs which provide assistance for eligible asylum seekers during the period in which their applications for protection are processed. This may include:

    • financial assistance under the Asylum Seeker Assistance Scheme (ASAS)
    • casework services through the Australian Red Cross under ASAS
    • legal assistance for preparing an application for a protection visa under the Immigration Advice and Application Assistance Scheme (IAAAS)
    • providing permission to work in Australia
    • facilitating access to Medicare.

Using your suspect terminology of boat people hiring criminal people smugglers would mean that every drug addict in Australia engaged in buying drugs from a dealer is innocent and not engaged in any illegal
activity? I seriously hope you remember this!!

Nope, not at all. You have not read my post properly.

    I said:

"Employing the services of a people smuggler does not disqualify one from seeking asylum.
They are still legitimate asylum seekers."

    No suspect terminology. Just fact.

Lets stick to the facts, shall we? The facts indicate NOT ALL boat people are accepted; so that would mean some do came here under false pretenses as I said. I also did not say "majority". So again, you should stick to the facts and accurately quote whats been written and stop making things up to fulfill your own agenda

Your terminology is suspect to the point of losing credibility. You claim its alright for boat people in Indonesia to engage in illegal activity by hiring the services of criminal people smugglers to smuggle them into another country, but you are then saying its illegal for a drug addict in Australia to engage in illegal activity by hiring the services of a drug dealer to sell them drugs -

If that is not a complete contradiction in terms, then I do not know what is?

I never once said they are. I said 70 to 97%. Fact.

Correct. I never said anything to the contrary. I said the 'majority' don't, not all. Fact.

I never once said that you did. Fact.

I never once changed a quote, from you or anyone else. Fact.

I've not made up anything: I've only presented facts, backed up with credible links. Fact.

My only agenda is making sure the facts are presented. Fact.

You seem to be coming apart at the seams, now that every argument or statistic you've presented has been shot down. Fact.

I never claimed that at all. You really should stop making things up.

    I said:

"Employing the services of a people smuggler does not disqualify one from seeking asylum. They are still legitimate asylum seekers."

    Read it carefully.

Actually if you are referring to the crew of the boats then they arent hiring criminals. No crime is committed until the boats land in Australian territory.

I still haven`t received a sensible answer from those who support the people smuggling trade. Is there a cap on the number of poor souls you`d like to encourage to try to jump the que into Australia? Please, no chldish little word games, these are real people dying, don`t play political football with drowning people.

No childish little word games indeed.

They aren't trying "to jump the que into Australia". (queue)

    You've asked a loaded question.

People charging and bullying their way into Australia by shoving and pushing aside all those ahead of them, should be given the almighty Aussie boot back from whence they came. And their parasitical legal beagles can shove off with them!

    Thankfully that isn't happening.

Boat people are coming to Australia via the perfectly legal process of asylum seeking.

    Crisis over.

Let's hope that one day we will see a Federal Government with enough gumption to stop this plethora of 'pretend' refugees barging their way into OZ ,so they can suck off the Aussie Welfare Teat. To which we have contributed during our lives. on the assumption it would be utilised for the benefit of genuine Aussies. And to which these queue jumpers have contributed nothing and, whilst they remain on welfare, probably never will.

Yeah, right. Because no other country has a refugee problem and nowhere as big as ours, right?

Crisis will continue whilst this weak Federal Government keeps giving into the Let them all in Mob.But then, what would expect from such a weak Federal Government and their minions in the legal business.? They will probably be sucking off the Welfare Teat for generations. Can you get a job if you can't speak English? What a joke,on the Aussie taxpayer, of course.
