No one should ever republish libel.

"By Saturday, the video had been condensed into a single image: One of the students, wearing a “Make America Great Again” hat, smiles before an Omaha tribal elder, a confrontation viewers took as an act of aggression by a group of white youths against an indigenous community—and by extension, people of color more broadly. Online, reaction was swift and certain, with legislators, news outlets, and ordinary people denouncing the students and their actions as brazenly racist.

But as the weekend wore on, a new video cast doubt on the clarity the original had appeared to offer. This one was shot by members of a Black Hebrew Israelite protest group that had also gathered at the Lincoln Memorial, where the incident took place. Over the hour-and-45-minute run time, members of the group mock and deride passersby of all stripes. According to a statement issued by Nick Sandmann, the Covington Catholic High School junior seen apparently intimidating the tribal elder in the original video, the students were also victims of harassment by the broader protest, and they had tried to defuse the situation by singing over the Black Hebrew Israelites."

Bezos apparently decided not to have WaPo apologize because no award of money damages could put a dent in his net worth.
The jury may want to consider that when they calculate the size of the award.

Bezos is a treasure - for every lawyer involved. ;-)

    Not when it's false.

You don't get to spread false rumors or defame somebody knowing it's false or for a.m alternative agenda under the protections of free speech.

Not remotely. I can't see any way for this ridiculous suit to prevail. Not how it works.

I doubt there will be any award at all.

Correct. Slander and libel are by definition false, and both undermine freedom of speech.

There will be since Sandmann was not a public figure and was vilified in print and it will be settled out of court.

So you believe people should be able to knowingly spread false information about another person and be protected by free speech laws?

I think willful or reckless defamation should be severely punished even if the target is a public figure.
The negligent defamation of ordinary people should also be hit hard.

These guys are libelous liars also shamelessly promoting the myth of PEACEFUL INDIGENOUS CULTURES: More than 140 children may have had their hearts removed in ancient sacrifice in Peru.

Absolutely will unless you think it will actually go to trial. If so, much more danger for those being sued.

Likely unwise to put the case in the hands of a jury. Given the low opinion everyday Americans have for the MSM due to it's slow march to irrelevant fake news oblivion, and the fact this young man was unfairly and mercilessly attacked, a jury may provide a much larger award, if WaPo is found guilty, that an out of court settlement would likely reach.

Slander and libel are against the law - even in the US.

Any jury of ordinary Americans will already know from personal experience that the MSM = Fake News.

And they will see some decent kid being eviscerated by an out of control biased and vengeful media.

    That equals big bucks IMO.
