Good news from Richmond for 2A defenders here in Virginia and elsewhere throughout the country:

I'm glad our lawmakers got it right, and Creigh Deeds is correct - definitions matter, and obviously that was a problem- as it's been elsewhere - in this bill.

    :)

To be fair, this -is- the only rational decision they could make -- and its good to see a couple Democrats understood this.

One has to wonder what effect the 27,000 gun owners, exercising their right to keep and bear arms, their right to assemble and their right to free speech, had on this vote.

One also has to wonder which of those rights the Democrats will seek to limit next.

And.... why didn't he Antifa trogs show up?

    :)

    Sorry - missed it.

I was going to say that this was a big victory for "People Power" in the OP because the pushback obviously had an impact. From the article cited above:

Politicians who play The Chicken Game with their armed electorate should always be prepared to chicken out when they see the high beams heading straight for them.

The DP has probably dodged some of the damage they are about to receive from the ballot box in November.

A victory indeed but it may not last long.

VA dems have decided to "study" the effects of a ban until next year.

Why? Because its an election year, and that means more Republicans voting in November.

They don't want to risk being kicked out in November.

We need to keep reminding people that Democrats will say they aren't coming for your guns until the day they come for your guns.

It's like how they say they are against illegal immigration but do everything they can to aid and abet illegal immigration.

So if I read the link correctly, they voted to table it, not reject. I guess no action will be taken until all of the questions and definitions are clarified and/or the bill modified accordingly.

I don't think cowardice had anything to do with it.

Judging from Creigh Deeds' statement it sounds like the language in the bill was too vague and/or broad to withstand a court challenge. Dems probably had people pushing and pulling from every direction.

Personally, I think they should handle this in the same way I think the Confederate statues should be handled - let the localities decide. Obviously, the issue of gun violence is greater in urban areas than rural areas so I think some flexibility is in order.

What is there to study, the Clinton DOJ said the AWB had no impact on crime.

Actually, unlike most states we vote on odd-numbered years (like New Jersey) so Dems are pushing this into an election year. I get your point, though - it's a risky tactic.

They're doing the same thing with other legislation like expunging the criminal records of people who got convicted of possessing small amounts of marijuana.

It appears that Dems didn't have their ducks in a row heading into this year's legislative session, so they're kicking the can down the road...

That's the way I'm reading it, too. "Delay" would have been a more accurate term than "reject" but nothing's getting done this year. The legislative session is almost over.

    So...

"There is plenty of evidence that once the ban expired, things got worse..."

    ...what's your point?

    And below from Wikipedia:

A 2017 review found that the ban did not have a significant effect on firearm homicides.[28]

A 2014 study found no impacts on homicide rates with an assault weapon ban.[29] A 2014 book published by Oxford University Press noted that "There is no compelling evidence that [the ban] saved lives".[30][31]

In 2013, Christopher S. Koper, a criminology scholar, reviewed the literature on the ban's effects and concluded that its effects on crimes committed with assault weapons were mixed due to its various loopholes. He stated that the ban did not seem to affect gun crime rates, and suggested that it might have been able to reduce shootings if it had been renewed in 2004.[33]

In 2004, a research report commissioned by the National Institute of Justice found that if the ban was renewed, the effects on gun violence would likely be small and perhaps too small for reliable measurement, because rifles in general, including rifles referred to as "assault rifles" or "assault weapons", are rarely used in gun crimes. That study, by the Jerry Lee Center of Criminology, University of Pennsylvania, found no significant evidence that either the assault weapons ban or the ban on magazines holding more than 10 rounds had reduced gun murders. The report found that the share of gun crimes involving assault weapons had declined by 17 to 72 percent in the studied localities. The authors reported that "there has been no discernible reduction in the lethality and injuriousness of gun violence, based on indicators like the percentage of gun crimes resulting in death or the share of gunfire incidents resulting in injury." The report also concluded that it was "premature to make definitive assessments of the ban's impact on gun crime," since millions of assault weapons and large-capacity magazines manufactured prior to the ban had been exempted and would thus be in circulation for years following the ban's implementation.[34]

In 2003, the Task Force on Community Preventive Services, an independent, non-federal task force, examined an assortment of firearms laws, including the AWB, and found "insufficient evidence to determine the effectiveness of any of the firearms laws reviewed for preventing violence."[35] A review of firearms research from 2001 by the National Research Council "did not reveal any clear impacts on gun violence outcomes." The committee noted that guns were relatively rarely used criminally before the ban and that its maximum potential effect on gun violence outcomes would likely be very small.[36]

In relation to a 2001 study the National Research Council in 2005, stated "evaluation of the short-term effects of the 1994 federal assault weapons ban did not reveal any clear impacts on gun violence outcomes."[37]

Research published by John Lott in 1998 found no impact of these bans on violent crime rates.[38] Koper, Woods, and Roth studies focus on gun murders, while Lott's look at murder, rape, robbery, and aggravated assaults.[38] Unlike their work, Lott's research accounted for state assault weapon bans and twelve other different types of gun control laws.[38]

I don't think they have dodged the damage they're gong to receive at the next elections (2021).

It's clear to me that Virginia Dems and their allies in the media have overstated the support they have for their gun control measures. They talk like they ran strictly on gun control and perhaps that's true in some places like Virginia Beach but that wasn't the case in our area. Health care was the primary issue.

That's reflected in the 2A sanctuary county movement where the vast majority of localities rejected the Democrats' gun control measures. The black areas on this map are where you see support for the gun control measures and those areas are Deep Blue.

There's another factor to consider, too. Not all of the Democrats in Virginia are "progressive" anti-gun Chicken Littles representing a bunch of "progressive" anti-gun Chicken Littles. Some of them are pro-2A centrists/moderates representing solidly pro-2A constituencies in suburban and particularly rural areas. In fact, the Dems in some rural areas aren't a lot different than the Republicans.

    1984-1993:
6 mass shootings with 'assault weapons' w/ 62 deaths
8 mass shootings with handguns w/ 67 deaths
    1994-2004:
5 mass shootings with 'assault weapons' w/ 35 deaths
12 mass shootings with handguns w/ 71 deaths
    2005-2015:
9 mass shootings with 'assault weapons' w/ 107 deaths
27 mass shootings with handguns w/ 271 deaths

    Conclusion
    None supported

Maybe the Dems will focus their energy on something important, like the soft drink cup size at fast food restaurants. That’s also a key objective for Bloomberg.

And maybe you will continue to support a POS who seems obsessed with badgers, doesn't know what state a major US city is in, and cannot close an umbrella...

    The future is unknown....
