    One by one....
The domino theory about the spread of communism was fake.
But it seems this one is going to spread all over Europe.
Even with a conservative party at the helm...

Well, if they want to destroy their auto industry go ahead.

The piling on of federal regulations in the 1970s and 1980s because of the influence of California with its smog problem, combined with DOT new regulations all but destroyed the American auto industry, which never fully recovered.

2040 sounds like a fairly good estimate to shoot for, 33 years is a long time. Try and picture what cars were like in 1984, yes they looked similar but the mechanics and technology behind the wheels is radically different.

I am sure they will be able to plug loopholes in this, "some cars can be made combustion", "licences to get certain ones". But by then hopefully the infrastructure is in place for hydrogen or something we don't even know about yet. Overall I think this is a good long term strategy and not as ridiculously over the top as some countries have stated their goals are

Since we are on fairy tale laws, I will become president in 2024 and ban automobiles in the year 2090...we have to many fat people, walking or riding a bicycle is fine..no horses , no mules no motors of any kind, no robotics or automation either.

I wonder how many jobs will be killed by France and GB's laws? How many college chemist will steer clear of the oil industry?

Diesel? I tought diesel was relatively clean. Smelly, noisy, but clean.

I believe heavier machinery will continue to run on diesel for a while.

This is the same argument used by both the Right and the Left no matter WHAT the argument is, also, the same answer does apply here.

There are two reasons why this is nothing more than a hyper partisan statement made by someone who doesn't like "the new tech" coming out.

First and foremost, it would be pretty pathetic to throw away technological improvements simply because people will have to learn new skills as they go after these new jobs.

Secondly, the amount of jobs with the new tech will replace those lost from the old tech.

If you want to go over the more relevant subject of "automation in general and how to solve the issues that come with it" I am more than happy to do so. But your argument is just silly

Recent research in coal mining states where diesel trucks and machinery are ubiquitous, rapid increases in health problems are occurring--especially among the young. Diesel isn't the answer.

2040? LOL what a complete piece of PC political BS, make a claim that appeases the green nutcases but also is totally pointless.

All this shows is the insanity of the UK.

Wish you Brits across the pond all the best with this. Food will magically appear in pubs and bars and ice boxes and people will trek miles upon miles on thy feet to obtain necessities, even with the wrong foot removed by the NHS.

    It's going to be glorious!

Erm, you guys do realize that electric and hybrid cars are by far the best selling cars in the UK now?

You do understand the nature of pollution - whether you are a climate denyer or not, there is no escaping that both petrol and diesel cause massive pollution problems.

I don't realise that at all.
I fully expect petrol cars to be the best sellers.

And second hand petrol cars to be the best sellers nationally.

Electric cars and hybrid cars while increasingly popular are anything but dominant in the UK.

    I'll have a quick Google.

According to this green website, 1.7 % of new cars sold in the UK are electric.

    http://www.nextgreencar.com/electric-cars/statistics/

So in fact electric cars are by far the worst selling of UK vehicles. A tiny niche in a very large market.

Umm, you do understand that electric cars (batteries) cause that very pollution you speak of. Maybe a new island off the coast of Scotland will be discovered where all of the batteries can be dumped when they are worthless.

California to fix roads, needs motor fuel taxes. So this state applied trick #2. Put up highway repairs to the vote and promise the roads get fixed.

Later we learn, funds were used to pay regular state bills.

Back they come with trick #3. Tell us, this time, we promise to fix the roads.

Well, we still have bad roads.

Trick was to promise again. Since they fooled the public 3 times, they figure why not shoot for trick 4.

    For what I just found....
It's the sulfer in diesel that makes it really bad. It's in there as a lubricant. When burned it causes acid rain. TBH that was a major issue like a decade ago maybe.... with deforestations all over the place as examples. But I'm not hearing a peep from that stuff anymore. Probably the reason why is because the EU demanded the sulfer in it to go from 2000 ppm in 1993 to 10 ppm 2009. Which seems like a major game changer. The US did something similar. That is where biodiesel kicks in. They make a blend to make it lubricant enough.

All in all... it's not just diesel, but also gas that's being binned in the UK as well as France. I think Norway as well. I got no doubts other nations will follow suit in the EU. They are basically giving their countries this amount of time to fix the problem of having enough locations to charge your car. While car manufacturers get enough time to get really good batteries who recharge quick.

Your either in or your out in France and the UK as a manufacturer.
Is that market intrestring enough for them? I wouldn't know why not.
Hence other nations will follow suit.

If it was just a country like Belgium... than they wouldn't really bother.

    Negative.
This is a right wing policy from the UK.
    They control the government.
    They made this policy.
