    Funny that this appears here as "a German saying".
    Here in Germany people think that it is a Chinese saying.
    And in China they probably think that it is an Indian saying.
    And in truth nobody knows where this saying comes from.

    But let's make a poll out of it!

    This sounds like Earnest Hemingways that to be a man a man must

    1) Father a son
    2) Plant a Tree.
    3) Fight a bull.
    4) Write a book.

    I've done all of those except father a son. My wife and I had a daughter.

    I am paying the mortgage on a house, I have two step kids and I have planted many trees (and I havn't yet cut any down that were still alive). I am yet planning to sell this house and build one of my own and I would like to have children of my own as well (thats the only thing I can't figure out how to do by myself...)

    I’ve done all those things. The most rewarding over time is having a son and daughter, and now grandsons and daughters.
