Whether you agree with it or not....this is a relatively gutsy move by Burger King.

I applaud them for it. And it might turn out to be a brilliant marketing move as well.

    Fake You Tube video.

Show me a Burger King where they have so many white faces behind the counter and they all speak English.

Most people want to simply be left alone. Unlike communists that want more than anything to mess with every persons life that they can, in any and every way that they can.

So it's wrong to get better/faster service if you pay more? Not sure I agree.

Is it wrong to get a better seat at a baseball game if you pay more?

Is it wrong if you get a bigger/better car if you pay more?

Burger King is basically admitting they'd rob their customers blind if they thought they could get away with it.

It depends if the internet is viewed as a right or a privilege?

If the former, then at least a basic, high speed internet should be available to everyone...like the Interstate Highway system.

If the latter, then the companies should be able to charge whatever they wish.

I believe that it is both. I think almost everyone should have access to high speed internet at a reasonable price.

But mega-high speed internet should be an extra cost item.

An accurate "Burger King-net neutrality" analogy:

"Oh, sorry, the Burger King is closed because their business plan was not as progressive as McDonalds'. Federal fact-checkers used research and statistics provided by McDonalds to determine this."

"If it -were- still open, your Whopper would cost $25 due to regulating Burger King as a utility."

Oddly enough Canada - usually considered a progressive nation - makes their citizens pay through the nose for high speed internet. Even in the big cities.

Had to dump AT&T for Comcast because AT&T refused to spend the money to raise our internet speed in our area up to the standards of the first couple of years of the twenty-first century. Also had to drop them from our home phone line and cellphones because of poor service. They wouldn't let go of our home number, so we had to switch numbers and they wouldn't unlock our cellphones, so we had to get new ones. Pain in the ass.

Now we have Comcast on the internet and home line at lower cost and higher speed and they keep upping the speed at no additional cost. We have Consumer Cellular for the cellphones at a lower cost and the original minute limit--which was very high for us--was changed to unlimited at no additional cost. Oh, the horror!

Well if the people can't, or won't, stand up to concentrated wealth and power, they get whatever concentrated wealth and power will allow.

The problem with doing that with the internet has always operated under the basis that it was public domain. Providers can charge access to the internet but they couldn't mess with your internet after you get on it. For example if I pay Comcast $75 or whatever for internet access then I get all of the internet access. But if Comcast makes a deal with Netflix then Comcast can now make it to where my internet speed is throttled back on sites like Hulu or Amazon so as to basically force me to watch Netflix because all of my Hulu videos keep buffering. I pay for Hulu so I should be able to use Hulu, I pay for internet access so I should be able to use all of my internet access, not have it limited to where my ISP deems acceptable.

There is nothing wrong with what you've said in your post, that's how the internet has always been. If I want 10mbps then I pay X, if I want 50mbps then I pay XX, etc. What corporations want to do now is say that yes you pay us XX for internet access, BUT, if you want to watch Youtube or Hulu then you have to pay us more. Sure you can still watch it but the video will take 30 mins to buffer because we won't unlock your entire 50mbps speed when you are on Hulu anymore unless you buy the "speedy lane Hulu package" for an additional $10 per month.

Take you car analogy for example. Yes you should get a better car if you pay more, which you currently do, same as with the internet. You get faster internet if you pay more but the whole internet is available. Just like if you pay only $10 a month for internet it's slower than $100 internet but the whole internet is still available to you. If you buy a Mercedes C Class you expect it to drive, just like if you buy a Honda Civic you expect it to drive.

Now imagine you buy a Mercedes then decide to go on a road trip then your car just starts slowing down and can no longer go above 30mph. On your pretty new digital dashboard a message pops up "Range limit reached, performance reduced to 30mph max, unlock full performance and unlimited range for an additional $100 per month. Or detour on to certified Daimler AG approved roads where our advertisements are located to unlock full vehicle performance".

What? You just spent $60,000 on a car you should be able to drive it wherever you want to. Mercedes Benz shouldn't be able to program your car to only have a 500 mile radius from the dealership unless you pay them extra right? Nor should they be able to cut your cars performance in half unless you drive on roads THEY want you to drive on because they have a deal with a casino along that route who paid them to increase traffic in their direction.

That's what internet companies are trying to do right now with your internet.

If net neutrality was just about speeds I wouldnt have an issue with doing away with it. Its a lot more complex though. Dumping NN means its legal for Comcast to block Amazon, Netflix, and Hulu, or at least throttle the speeds down so far that they are unwatchable. Then they can raise the price on their own streaming service.

News sites can be the same where ATT allows fast service to CNN, but slows service to Fox.

The examples can go on forever. The only way to prevent the abuses is to require all providers to treat all content and site equally.
