"No business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has the right to continue in this country. By Living wages, I mean more than the bare subsistence level - I mean the wages of a decent living." President FDR

By all accounts, $10/hr is what will keep a single person working full time just above the poverty level.

How do you disagree with this and call yourself an American that is loyal to his countrymen ?

How do you knowingly keep hundreds of thousands of people unemployed and call yourself an American that is loyal to his countrymen?

    define "living wage"

10$ /hour = 20800 annually. Certainly not pleasant. But one must really wonder about the arbitrary "poverty lines" when a family of 4 can live off of 14,000 a year.

    http://www.inquisitr.com/554263/family-of-four-lives-on-14000-a-year-and-loves-it/

    14,000/4 = 3500 per person....

even if you only divide that by the 2 working age adults, that's 7000 a year, to cover 2 people.

3.37 an hour is all you have to make for 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year, to make 7000.00 a year anually.

you can blame why people continue to only make 8/hour on anything you want. I have my beliefs, others blame the system.... either way. A family of 4 shows that 14k is a liveable wage for 4

Don't worry. Those businesses will all go to Colombia, or Mexico, or wherever.

Businesses go where they are wanted.

As a man I knew (a Republican who made a cool quarter $million$ the year he made the statement to me) told me..."I will pay someone the LEAST amount I can." I have no idea what the 'floor' might have been for those he actually hired.

They don't have a mortgage, and their property taxes are next to nothing.

Try doing this in New York, California, or just about three quarters of the US, and see how well it works.

But, it's obvious, this one has made the rounds on the trash blogs.

The message: settle for what the men on Wall Street think you deserve.

It's the Romney, Koch, Limpballs, Fox message.

Yell about opportunity, but know your place!

Not every employee seeks employment for the purpose of providing for the needs of an entire family.

Why can't individuals decide on their own the terms of fair employment?

What makes you think every employee would make the same decisions you would?

Therefore, I support the individual right of workers to work for whatever terms they choose on their own, and that is of course supporting my countrymen and women.

What if my mother in law wants to sit on a chair at the front door of a Walmart for 4 hours a day and greet people? Why can't she accept 5 or 6 dollars an hour for that service? She doesn't need to provide for a family. My father in law works full time and has a military pension. She just wants some spending money that she can use at the casino.

What if my 18 year old son wants an entry level job that he can use to gain experience and build his resume? He doesn't need to provide for a family. He doesn't even know what that is like.

What if my wife wants to use her MOT degree to create a private in home health network to provide services to elderly and disabled who can't afford to pay 10 an hour?

The OP quotes FDR, the man who introduced America to the Welfare state, furthered by another Democrat, LBJ. Why would anyone revere anything he has to say in terms of economic policy?

I disagree because a job is a stepping stone or ladder rung to the gathering of experience which leads to raises, promotions and/or the starting of ones own business. The idea that a kid fresh from highschool with zero experience at anything should have the income or "living wage" of a semi-experienced family man is simply absurd from any angle. FDR was clearly clueless. If liberals want to help Americans, they should create jobs or a job friendly environment for American citizens by expulsing illegals and encouraging the manufacturing industry to come back from overseas.

It sounds to me like your $10 figure is just an arbitrary one you made up because you thought it sounded good. But by all means show us how "all accounts" point at that figure.

I just did a quick check and the poverty level on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services website and the poverty guideline does not line up with your assertion.

2013 POVERTY GUIDELINES FOR THE 48 CONTIGUOUS STATES AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA

For a single person household, the poverty guideline was $11,490. So you would have to work 1,149 hours at $10 per hour (40 hour work week) for just under 29 weeks to hit the number the feds use. It would take 35 weeks if we were to say 32 hours was full time.

They also have another figure called the poverty threshold which was $12,119, but we can see it wouldn't take many more hours of work to hit that one.

So, according to the HHS, you number is either incorrect or you have dreamed up a number of hours per week that constitutes full time that is just as arbitrary which would, of course, still make your number wrong.

Let me get this straight. You made up a figure and anyone challenging the figure you just pulled out of thin air shouldn't call themself an American?

Am I not allowed to call myself an American since I actually looked at the figures and found they don't support your nice round figure? I'm not following your logic.

What work did Romney do to earn $20 million in 2011 ?! And why the hell did he pay only 8% taxes on it while the rest of us paid 20% ?!

You ultimately come off like a slave justifying the wealth and power of the pharaoh.

    WAKE UP !!!!!

Google "why minimum wage needs to be at least $10/hr" and do some research instead of accepting what Fox News tells you

Liberal tyranny. It used to be an oxymoron. Now the tyrants wear the word like a sheep skin to hide the fact that they are wolves.

In this instance, the tyranny takes shape in the restriction that you can't choose to work for anything less then they say you can work for.

Give me your best logical economic argument why changing the scale of the instrument does anything to change the value the instrument measures.

If you add more lines to a ruler, do you get taller?

If you take some lines away from your bathroom scale, does that make you thinner?

Do you not pay the lowest prices you possibly can?

Well maybe not you, but a smart person does.

Works the same way when purchasing labor.

And read a bunch of opinions on why people think the minimum wage should be a nice round arbitrary number? I don't care what those people's opinions, and that is irrelevant here. You first stated that $10 per hour fulltime would keep a single person just above the poverty level. That is what I am challenging. I proved your statement to be false using government data. I used real figures. If you want to challenge those figures then do so, but failing to do so means you will have failed to support your assertion about $10 an hour.

I don't watch Fox, and I did do my research. What part of "I just did a quick check and the poverty level on the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services website" are you having trouble understanding?

But by all means, go ahead and cite the figures that contradict the numbers that HHS lists as the poverty level. Those are the numbers I used.

How about showing us a little honesty. How about admitting that you just made up that $10 per hour figure? Or were you fed that figure by the Huffington Post? I just proved the number is meaningless using the data from HHS.

    http://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty/13poverty.cfm#thresholds

Face it. You made an assertion you can't back up.
