ALERT FOR CALIFORNIA Evacuations Ordered Due to 'Hazardous Situation' at Oroville Dam Emergency Spillway https://weather.com/news/news/oroville-dam-spillway-californi(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)(*)-emergency With the emergency spillway expected to fail, officials have ordered the immediate evacuation of areas near the damaged Oroville Dam in California. Officials anticipate an imminent failure of the auxiliary spillway and have ordered residents of the low levels of Oroville and areas downstream to evacuate in a northward direction, toward Chico, according to the California Department of Water Resources. Marysville and Yuba County are also under mandatory evacuation. "A hazardous situation is developing with the Oroville Dam auxiliary spillway," the Butte County Sheriff Department said in a release. "Operation of the auxiliary spillway has lead to severe erosion that could lead to a failure of the structure. Failure of the auxiliary spillway structure will result in an uncontrolled release of flood waters from Lake Oroville." In response, officials are releasing up to 100,000 cubic feet per second, up from 55,000 cubic feet per second, from the damaged main spillway in an effort to ease pressure on the emergency spillway before a failure occurs, according to The Sacramento Bee. An evacuation center has been established for Oroville residents at the Silver Dollar Fairgrounds in Chico. The National Weather Service has issued a flash flood warning for possible dam failure. Areas affected include Oroville, Palermo, Gridley, Thermalito, South Oroville, Oroville Dam, Oroville East and Wyandotte. The warning is in effect until 4:15 p.m. PST on Monday, Feb. 13. Is anyone on here affected by this, or have relatives or friends that are? If so, alert them....
The should evacuate Chico for precautionary measures. a lot of rain is still coming 2 days from now. https://weather.com/weather/tenday/l/Oroville+CA+95966:4:US
Why? Chico is upstream and uphill from the dam. That is like warning your upstairs neighbor if your bathtub overfills.
I was only concerned with incidence like this before. it's way north of Chico. But with this calamity you're right.
The entire region was hit like that in December and January. The rains this year are like none I have ever seen before. We actually started to have moss grow on the sidewalk in front of our house.
Much better than the droughts we've encountered just recently, we only have to manage this supposedly blessings provided, somehow it will help farmers and us the consumers for it will certainly raise production and hopefully make the price go down again.
Nope. All drought restrictions remain in place. No changes in water allotments. http://drought.ca.gov/topstory/top-story-69.html Welcome to California.
I heard the evacuation order was lifted for now. At least you can go home for the moment. I hope they can manage the rain coming later this week. I feel for you. This is a really bad situation.
