On one hand, he is right. Mom and dad are raising fat kids. They don't know what is best. Rather than making parents take responsibility, restaurants are having to carry yet another burden.

What if they serve a child a soda with a straw? Will servers now have to ask for ID?

Obesity is a serious problem. Today's children are the fatest ever. 18.5% of 8-year olds are obese compared to about 6% 40 years ago. Not to mention the increased prevelance oc earl onset diabetes. Over consumption of 'sugary' drinks sweetened with corn syrup is a prime suspect. You know this, I know this, most parents know this. But for those who think it's a good idea to pump our kids with a gallon of Mountain Dew, it's time that the government gets inv...(huuugghh).

That's when we need an intervention from the govern....(huuuucckk).

    The government has to...(ghhhhhhuuuuuhhhh).

I'm sorry. I can't. This is too stupid. I tried to take the other side on this one, and my body just won't let me. It's that dumb.

If you regularly feed your child soda, they will get fat. Also, if you let them smoke they will get emphysema. If you're taking them to McDonald's with any regularity and you're getting them a soda, that's on you. McDonald's, of all corporations, should not be your dietary consultant.

What would we do without the government to save us?

Correction [8/21/18 1:01 p.m. ET]: Previously, this story inaccurately claimed that the bill banned restaurants from serving sugary beverages to children. We have corrected the error.

California is getting more and more like Nazi party every day. Freedom comes with a cost and that cost is doing what you want despite it being bad for you.

Better parents are needed to curb their kids sugar intake, not some stupid laws that prohibit kids from drinking soda. Besides, can't they just drink Coke Zero?

The American Cancer Society led the charge on this bill, telling CBS 13 that “cancer is fought in the halls of government, not just in the halls of a hospital.”

    Here's the relevant text:

'This bill would require a restaurant, as defined, that sells a children’s meal that includes a beverage, to make the default beverage water, sparkling water, or flavored water, as specified, or unflavored milk or a nondairy milk alternative, as specified. The bill would not prohibit a restaurant’s ability to sell, or a customer’s ability to purchase, an alternative beverage if the purchaser requests one. The bill would make a violation of its provisions an infraction, but would make the first violation subject to a notice of violation. Under the bill, the 2nd and 3rd violations would be punishable by fines of not more than $250 and $500, respectively. By imposing additional duties on local enforcement agencies and by creating a new crime, the bill would impose a state-mandated local program.'

It appears you would still be allowed to purchase Mountain Dew for your child, but only if you specify it. Otherwise milk.

And this will stop the parent, who finally gives into Juniors screeching about wanting a soda, how?

(sarcastic and snarky comment not directed at the poster quoted, you just happened to post the 'relevant text')

It probably won't, and it's still more responsibility than a restaurant should have. Not the end of the world though. And, more than a few sources misrepresented the language. My bad for assuming FOX was being honest with me on that one.

It actually isn't much responsibility to change ones menu board and or printed menu. Yes costs involved, but more so for a printed menu than a standard menu board (most restaurants that carry 'kid' specific meals usually just have a menu board) and a quick change to a website, if they have one.

The bottom line is the governmental involvement, once again, in something that the parents should be addressing, not the source of the food. Other than banging my head on the wall, I really don't see a way to do something to get the point across to the parents.... perhaps they should be the one's 'fined' for feeding the crap to the kids....

Its still an article and still worth discussing. Lets look past the article and read from the bill itself:

    What do you think?

Lets not forget that the government is forcing you and me to pay for the high fructose corn syrup in the first place. Why are we still allowing welfare recipients to spend 10% of the money give them on sweetened beverages?

I do like the idea of fining parents!

Thanks for reminding me of that, lol.

I would love stricter rules to be applied to any assistance program involving food. The problem is, they use the assistance for what it allows, and their own money (if there is such an animal) to purchase what they want that's not covered. If you have ever priced soda, it's cheap and the sugar makes the kids happy, but we all saw (and knew beforehand) the results of that particular experiment of taxation.

I'll make my usual statement: Education and information is the only way people will understand that what you consume has long term detriment, or benefits.

So should most that come from CA, but unfortunately, many make it through. Would you call what they tried to do, a reasonable solution to obesity?

No, but it's a start since many humans lack the capability to control their intake of certain substances..
