Gas in San Francisco today (Oct. 17th) seems to be going for between $3.95 - $4.09 per gallon for the cheapest unleaded stuff -- which is not a good thing to burn at or near sea level, incidentally. That price compares with $2.43 - $2.54 per gallon in Denver, Colorado. The cheap crap (85-octane) is actually better at altitudes above ~4,000 ft. (1,220 meters). :omg:

I seldom agree with the governor of California, Gavin Newsom--in fact, it almost hurts to do so-- but he is correct when he says that the power shutdowns are a result of PG&E's "greed and mismanagement."

Just a thought: Why not place these power lines underground--or, at the least, use much sturdier poles, which are highly unlikely to fall?

Cost. I don't think customers are ready for $200 monthly minimum bill.

Oh yeah - we had many, MANY teachers that couldn't make it to work today because of the fire and the freeways being closed, and two at our school that live in the evacuation zone. Our principal lives in LA and couldn't make it. It's bad.

That would be a reasonably response--except for one thing: How do we know that this would cause the cost of a monthly bill to rise astronomically (even if $200 represents an astronomical increase; which I am not sure is the case)?

Lets hope damage isn't too severe. Shutting of power isn't the answer.

Weren't you the person who was going to send me the pictures of the MAGA Trump hat wearing meth users at the local trailer park? If so, where are the pictures?

Consumer Reports says that, for automobiles designed to burn regular fuel (86 octane here), it does not improve anything--whether gasoline mileage, engine cleanliness, or anything else--to use premium fuel.

There is no easy answer. Either shut off or risk another fire. The Kincaid fire was cause by human error. PGE didn’t shut off the power soon enough. The state Democrats are turning this into a political game instead of looking for solutions. They complain about PGE being greedy but not a mention of greed about Bezos, Gates, Google and Apple executives, Disney, Musk, et al. PG&E is out there to provide a service and to make money like any other company out there. Don’t want your power shut off, vote for someone else so they can allow PG&E to trim back the tree branches that near power lines. Can’t have both.

And I suppose it would be completely futile to ask why anybody who had deliberately been convicted of setting fires should be on PROBATION....

If we really wanted to put a stop (STOP) to deliberate arson, we should take these convicted, dangerous wretches, pour gasoline on them, and light them up. Want to bet THAT wouldn't cut incidences of arson down to about zero...? :flame:

Yeah. I treated several firefighters killed by an arsonist.

And again-the media is always talking about how dangerous the conditions are for fire-I swear these idiots wait to hear that before they go out and set fires.

A million years ago, when even I was young, I served in the volunteer fire department in a small town. I wasn't a 'hero', but our small force fought enough fires (including those that ended very badly) so that, generally, I think I understand exactly what you mean.

Arson involving the death of a firefighter should be treated as a ZERO-TOLERANCE capital crime. Instead, today's courts give the criminals probation.... To put it mildly, in 21st-century America, I would never serve in any voluntary capacity again.

I’m on a volunteer fire department in nowhere-ville flyover country. It’s fine. But I agree with you in general. The country is changing...

Agreed. Interestingly the arsonist got the death penalty in California.

In practice he will never be killed but he should be.

(Tongue-in-cheek) The only way that anyone is ever terminated by the government in California is by being TAXED TO DEATH....

I'm with you, brother. At 4AM, when you're rolling the hoses back up, sliding around in the ice, snow, and mud, after you've taken the dead out of yet another structure fire that was impossible to beat down until it burned the place up, that's when you know what it is to be a "volunteer". I salute you, even as I encourage you to always 'watch your six'.... The country has changed, and not for the better.

They caught a 27-year-old woman near Corona, CA, with flammable liquids who had deliberately set brush fires in two locations. Fortunately a witness observed her surreptitiously, followed her to the second fire she attempted to start, and zeroed the police right down on her before either fire spread.

I just don't know what the hell to think or say other than people like this shouldn't be allowed to continue in the world.
