First, tax payers are forced to pay to grow the corn that is a main ingredient in sweetened beverages.

Second, tax payers are forced to buy sweetened beverages for Welfare recipients. (10% of EBT/SNAP benefits are spent on sweetened beverages)

Third, tax payers are forced to pay for the healthcare that goes with 1/3 of our population being diabetic or pre-diabetic.

Now, to top it off, they want us to believe they care about our health by proposing a tax!!!

It's getting hard to name ANYTHING in California that they DON'T have some sort of added tax tacked on it.

Don't feel bad, my family in New Jersey told me the governor wants to tax rain water.

    Oh look, more authoritarianism....

This is what pisses me off about single payer health care. As soon as "we" start paying for it, you are going to see LOTS of cases like this where people want to do what they can to stop you from eating/drinking/using a certain product.

Then, if you try to speak up, you are shouted down as "An unhealthy fat person who wants kids to die!!!!"

Stuff like this is going to get Trump elected again

It would be a smarter move to simply remove sweetened beverages from being able to be purchased via food stamps. The EBT program needs to be revamped nationwide to promote healthy foods not junk food — I’m sure Pepsi Co lobbyists would disagree though.

Obesity related illnesses represent almost $200 billion of our national healthcare costs and an untold cost to overall productivity.

I wish they’d stop lying when justifying sin taxes. Just like cigarette taxes, they don’t care about anyone’s health they want that money. Your screwing people why you gotta lie to them too?

That’s true but I highly doubt they are concerned with anything else but getting money.

It was proposed, but Pepsi Co lobbied against it. Another step in the right direction would be to remove the subsidy for producing corn.

If only higher taxes made people healthier!

The better to micromanage every aspect of your existence, my friend, which is why we should never allow power-hungry "progressive" control freaks to seize control of our health care.

I hear that they are developing a tax for each sex act that a person does. It'll go in effect when they get a reliable wi-fi meter.

well, technically foods aren't taxed... orange juice no tax, orange drink taxed... prepared foods taxed... water not taxed unless it's bottled/canned/packaged... strange isn't it...
