As some of you may have already heard, the state of California recently passed a law that will require Uber and Lyft to provide full-time employment, worker's compensation, sick leave, state minimum wage, and other workplace benefits and laws, to the drivers, treating them as employees of the company.

Uber and Lyft have said the new law will not allow the ride-share model to be viable, and they will no longer continue to operate in the state.

However, ride share services from Uber and Lyft are very popular in the state, since there are many big cities with inadequate parking spaces and high density areas where many people do not own cars.

What this will inevitably end up doing is forcing the ride share business service to go underground. It will simply be run by a new company that will be based out of state, where it will be difficult for California authorities to find or go after them. Uber and Lyft are after all basically just tech companies that deal with information coordinating through a simple little app on an iPhone.

That means that if the state really wants to stop this, they are going to have to go after the drivers themselves, rather than just the company.

That will not look very good in a progressive state like California, where no one minds "making the big business pay".
This new law was passed with the stated goal of creating workplace protections for the people who work as drivers using ride sharing service platforms, putting them on equal par with conventional taxi drivers who complained that their business was being undercut by the new ride-sharing business model that does not have to follow the normal rules.

We need to start building that wall around California.
