By that logic, the right to own a gun will morph into a duty to use it. Sorry, but I disagree. People have a right to do what they want with their own lives, but not to force others to do the same.
Which is why 1) assisted suicide is better and 2) due to current laws, my Plan A is to disappear in the wilderness with a gun and some really good illegal drugs. Maybe, if I’m feeling cantankerous enough, I’ll frame some asshat for my disappearance.
Just to be clear on my position because a tangential discussion on a unqualified right to commit suicide may have confused things. I am 100% in favor of regulated physician assisted suicide in cases of terminal diagnosis consistent with most of the state laws like Oregon's death with dignity act, but I am not in favor of expanding past terminal cases. The AMA is not about to endorse a blanket right to get a doctor to help with suicide for depression, chronic but non terminal illness or 'just because' and any effort to extend it beyond, will backfire.
You forget the lifetime of Social Security payments people like myself have made. I should have paid into a private pension fund and now would receive better payments.
