Prior to the ACA the private sector was so inefficient it had an overhead of 30% compared to Medicare with an overhead of 2%. From a patient perspective only getting 70 cents out of every dollar of premium in the private sector was abysmal compared to receiving 98 cents out of every dollar for Medicare.

The system was bloated and wasteful because of defensive medicine done to prevent lawsuits and government rules and regulations that meant that any organization of more that 49 workers had a department dedicated entirely to shifting paper work for the government. We have not had a true free market in insurance and health care since the late sixties.

Free market driven health care, does it work? Depends on what your definition of work is. Does it grant health care to all? No. But is that the evaluation of it's effectiveness? Of course not. Health care is a personal responsibility. The use of social aggregation simply transfers the cost to others for those who consume the most of it. If this were burning fossil fuels, liberals would be demanding taxation for consumption. And yet, here we are, liberals demanding that consumption doesn't matter, and that restriction of consumption is immoral. It's so much fun to watch.
