Looks like Carter got the go ahead from BO to upgrade security at bases, Including Off Site Recruiting Centers, Reserve Centers and ROTC. This is good news, indeed. What say ye?

Defense Secretary Ash Carter has directed the military services to implement new protective measures, including arming more troops, to bolster security at small, off-installation sites in the wake of the deadly attack in Chattanooga.

Carter called for the services to work more closely with local law enforcement agencies, install improved mass warning systems, and to arm “appropriately qualified individuals at select off-installation facilities” that require greater than normal protection.

Additionally, Carter directed security surveys to be conducted at the Defense Department’s roughly 7,000 off-installation sites, including recruiting stations, reserve centers and ROTC units, and to prioritize funds to ones that need physical security upgrades.

The new measures must be put in place by April, with deadlines for some of them coming before the end of 2015, he said.....snip~

Here's what I can't figure out, you would expect all Marines, most Army soldiers and many sailors and airmen to be already qualified to be armed.

Things couldn't have changed that much in the U.S. military since my tour of duty, have they ?

Didn't matter which branch of the military you served in, one of the first things you learned during basic training were your 11 General Orders of a sentry. By the time you finished basic training you were qualified to stand post with a loaded weapon. And who never found themselves not standing guard duty ???

I would have thought any NCO and above would be allowed to carry. Still this a good move that Carter is making. Plus he wants reports on sites where there is more activity and a chance of something happening.

Maybe there are still a few that can't see the writing on the wall.

Well Carter didn't do it on his own. All you had to do was go to any of the military forums and blogs and active duty and vets were up in arms that those in the military aren't allowed to defend themselves and their buddies. I'm sure Congress was flooded with letters and e-mails. This no-gun zones on military bases is total bull (*)(*)(*)(*).

Next is to get rid of the military civilian police on military bases and return law enforcement and perimeter and interior security on military bases back to the military Provost Marshals . The military has policed themselves pretty well for over 200 years and when civilians started taking over, it's been a complete failure.

Oh, I am sure there were plenty sounding off. Still, he must have told the Peep that this needs to be done. Now that BO has his free spending for the next 2 years. BO would give a little.

Just add it to the tab.

You think the incompetent CnC is catching on how it works in a democracy ?

Kinda six years and ten months to late I would say.
