Hard decision sometimes. We don’t have our pets for very long.

I have seen "cats in pain". Like passing a stone.
And don't regard dying as necessarily painful.
I hospice my old, dying cats.
First they lose interest in food.
Wither down to stinky fur with bones inside.
    And still purr with attention.
I was with 2 at the moment of death.
One, blinded as she died and could hardly walk
on her last day, escaped to the back yard with
a leap and found her way to the stinky water
    she sampled every day.

Support home hospice as long as they
    are not in pain.

Maybe not in pain but, what kind of quality of life is that?

I'm not knocking your choice, if that's what you do, just saying, it doesn't sound like those cats were enjoying life.

Quality enough to be social & purr with attention.

If I did decide to euthanize a cat, I would do so
    via a house call veterinarian.
A visit to the vet's office seem cruel to me
on their last day of life.

I'm very sorry to read that you had to have your 15 year old cat euthanized.

At one point, my wife and I somehow ended up with 9 cats. Two of them simply disappeared but, over time, we had to have 6 euthanized and are down to one 16 year old Siamese who is in excellent shape especially for his age.

I never considered myself as much of a "cat person" but this loyal, affectionate and amusing Siamese who sleeps on my pillow next to my head at night changed that.

Since I'm over 70, I've had to have my share of cats and dogs euthanized and it doesn't get any easier so you have my condolences for your loss. I'm sure that you did all that you could.

Best wishes for the New Year.

Ever notice dogs DON'T Train Their Humans
    or Others.

    Why a Cat, Data, Barkley
    compared to a dog, Archer?

Riker is not a Cat Person

Yet social misfits (Data & Barkley) are!

What is the message? The interpretation.

Don't FORGET "Spot" and Worf associations.
Also see Riker & Spot spoof video above, not broadcast as part of Spot's Story.
But, "we" have Data & Barkley fershur

I mean if you like cats, society does place
    "associations" with it. Si?

I like them, but I am ungodly allergic to them. As in, the worst of the worst when it comes to cat allergies. If I look at a cat, I already start sneezing. As far as the stigma goes, I notice it. I find a lot of single women sit at home and hoard cats. I think it’s disturbing.

I have an inside cat, an in and out cat and a stays out until 11pm and wants back out at daylight cat. It is a good combination. When they are all three inside due to weather all day, they will start to drive me bonkers, especially since the mostly outside cat really likes to meow constantly if he is inside too long.

    TIME TO SAY GOOD BYE?

After weeks of procrastination, I've finally made an appointment to have my loyal, affectionate and delightfully mischievous Siamese cat "put down" tomorrow morning.
I'm sure that about everyone reading this has had to do something similar at some point in their lives and can emphasize with the same question I've asked myself repeatedly since I was told that my Siamese had an aggressive form of cancer about two months ago:
    "Is it time yet?"

First of all, my mother gave me the Siamese because he would not stay in her apartment which is at a retirement community. There's not many things that the Siamese loved more than being chased around the retirement community by agitated little old ladies armed with canes and walkers.

The cat's name is "The Siamese" or just "Siamese" because my wife hated the name my mother had given him which was "Sin Sin" so after months of calling him the Siamese, it just stuck.

Since I believe that the quality of life is more important than the quantity, I decided to let him come and go as he pleased over the years.
With the exception of a brief ride on the roof of someone's car, subsequent tumble to the side of the road and 2 day walk home there have been very few feline mishaps.

All I know is that I will miss his warm and soft presence by my head at night on the pillow, in my lap while watching the birds* and his countless other endearing antics, sounds and quirks that have made him such a dear old friend.

    * The Siamese has never even been tempted to kill a bird

Making that decision is about as difficult as they come. If Siamese is showing signs of deterioration, then yes, it's time.

My thoughts are with you and him.

Thank you so much for your kind words. They are very helpful when you have to do what in reality is the kindest thing when a loyal old companion is suffering and there's nothing left to be done.

I was able to hold my dear old Siamese who was alert, curious, affectionate up to the end when the Vet. was giving him the lethal injection and I watched his beautiful blue eyes close for the last time.

I know that this is a debate forum but it's comforting to know that whatever differences exist are transcended by a common bond we all share which is empathy for each other's animal companions.

It's only been 2 hours since I had the Siamese euthanized so there's still a lump in my chest but your kind thoughts have genuinely helped to ease its grip.

It is with sincere gratitude that I wish you, your family and your animal companions the best of health...

Thank you too for your kind thoughts and comforting words.

Yes, Siamese had his good moments but since he could barely walk and his cancer was making it so that his painful moments outweighed the good ones I knew it was time.

After Siamese was diagnosed with cancer, I was lucky enough to have several weeks to pamper him and say good bye but when it became painful for him to walk, I knew that I was only procrastinating the inevitable.

Yes, you're right. It's so easy to put off euthanizing an animal companion just one more day but I know that it would have been selfish to prolong his misery.

    Many thanks, again.

I genuinely wish you, your family and animal companions the best of health.

My heartfelt sympathy, dear friend. It is a very hard thing to do for us humans. I know, I cancelled the vet appointment twice before I could go through with it. Our last two family dogs, both a year apart in age and leaving for good. Both are buried on the property.
That was in the late nineties. We still talk very fondly about them.
A hug for you, dear Grau, I feel your pain.
