And I would submit that we are a 1.) safer nation because of it 2.) Better able to 'mitigate' any gross overreach of gov. (tyranny) from ever surfeiting / happening in the first place 'ipso facto' our being well armed... (plenty of other bullet points this evening after I get back home if you're interested)... lol.

No, the NRA fights to protect the Constitutional rights of ALL Americans. Your hyperbole and rhetoric are devoid of merit.

Qualify that... 'Safest citizenry from the encroachment of Gov. abuse', 'safest from Prohibited Possessors from having a tactical advantage over us', 'safest from being a victim of 'peer', familial, intoxicated violence'... qualify what SAFE means to you... This Nation was founded at the bloody barrel of a gun & hundreds of thousands have laid down their life to 'enshrine' for us our freedoms. Many more, hundreds of thousands, have sacrificed & continue to sacrifice for our UNPARALLELED FREEDOMS... I am OK with a modicum of innocent blood being shed in the preservation of our freedoms. The "if even if one life is saved" mantra is an absolute anathema to the centuries of sacrifice that has imbued our personal freedoms! "Give me liberty or give me death" ... "the tree of liberty must be watered from time to time by the blood of patriots & tyrants" ... I hold firmly to these tenets of FREEDOM & I hope your contrarian tenets wither & die on the vine... S (sorry, running late... got to go)...

There has never been a point in the history of the nation of Australia when such was not the case, however.

We're a violent people. Our non-firearm homicide rate is higher than your entire homicide rate.

I'm going to repeat myself here, at least y'all know my unwavering position on these pivotal matters, lol. (I Have an OP thread on this TJ link as well) Great for you that you deem yourselves "Safer"... I deem myself as having liberties that U don't posess... "Freedoms" that U lethargically relinquished; & I'll take what I have been blessed with, any day, over what U purport to have! I'll go one better, I'm (ultimately) willing to sacrifice myself / see my loved ones sacrifice for the furtherance of maintaining these ideals... To ea. their own. (glad you're not a US citizen though!)

"I prefer dangerous freedom over peaceful slavery" is a translation of a Latin phrase that Thomas Jefferson used: "Malo periculosam, libertatem quam quietam servitutem." It has also been translated as, "I prefer the tumult of liberty to the quiet of servitude."
    https://www.monticello.org/site/jefferson/i-prefer-dangerous-freedom-over-peaceful-slavery-quotation

Jefferson used the Latin phrase in the following letter to James Madison:

Societies exist under three forms sufficiently distinguishable. 1. Without government, as among our Indians. 2. Under governments wherein the will of every one has a just influence, as is the case in England in a slight degree, and in our states in a great one. 3. Under governments of force: as is the case in all other monarchies and in most of the other republics. To have an idea of the curse of existence under these last, they must be seen. It is a government of wolves over sheep. It is a problem, not clear in my mind, that the 1st. condition is not the best. But I believe it to be inconsistent with any great degree of population. The second state has a great deal of good in it. The mass of mankind under that enjoys a precious degree of liberty and happiness. It has it's evils too: the principal of which is the turbulence to which it is subject. But weigh this against the oppressions of monarchy, and it becomes nothing. Malo periculosam, libertatem quam quietam servitutem. Even this evil is productive of good. It prevents the degeneracy of government, and nourishes a general attention to the public affairs. I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. - Jefferson to Madison, January 30, 17871

It's a multi-variate issue. Our history with slavery, and the treatment of Blacks since. A 1000 mile unsecured border tied in to a nice War on Drugs. Just plain evil people. Lack of mental health treatment. Subcultures that revel in violence. I'm sure there's more.
