We often here the falsehood parroted that internet censorship efforts are solely or primarily aimed at right wing or right leaning voices.

Recent events have plainly exposed the true nature of these corporate attacks on the New Town Square, and it is ugly:

    https://www.rt.com/usa/441075-facebook-twitter-banned-accounts/

When you advocate the silencing of one voice, you advocate the silencing of all.

This is only the beginning of the savage purge of any voice coming from anywhere but the narrow, corporate approved brand of Hollowspeak.

Be afraid, be angry, be appalled.

    But keep your voice strong.

It is saddest and most surprising to see how many of those groups were anti-police.

    My heart says good riddance.
My brain says "freedom of speech".

What has the world come to that people are being driven by intolerance, and hate is being normalized. Did this start with "every kid gets a trophy" and then it was magnified by the internet where haters could join together and celebrate their hate? Who knows....

Either way, it is quite sad.

I agree these websites should not be censoring opinion Pages they don't agree with I don't really care what their politics are. Free speech is Free Speech. And extreme left-wing organizations like Copwatch or police police shouldn't be banned off of Facebook or any other platform for that matter.

You should have spoken up for the conservatives when they were being banned because it is all of our right to free speech once we let them silence someone they can silence everyone.

I hope people on either side of the political Spectrum can see that these are corporations with corporate interests not Freedom Fighters. They are doing what is best for their bottom line and nothing else.

There are two quotes that come to mind in this regard.

"I may not agree with what you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

"When they came for the Jews I didn't speak up because I was not a Jew. When they came for the gypsies I did not speak up because I was not a gypsy. When they came for me nobody was left to speak up for me."

The truth is these anti-police web pages are probably vile. But they have the right to speak. We as people cannot allow censorship even if it's against something we don't agree with. The enemy of my enemy is not necessarily my friend.

People have the right to hate whoever they want they have the right to voice that hatred. Any censorship of that with an exception of censorship of inciting direct acts of violence is a violation of the First Amendment.

I don't use Facebook anymore after these 3 incidents happened on the same day:

    1. I watched 3 episodes of Shameless on Showtime. I was browsing FB on my phone and ads for Shameless suddenly were popping up

    2. When people share funny video clips, I have to sit through more ads than Youtube

    3. All of the political posts all of the armchair politicians are making (aka, my friends and family). I come HERE to discuss politics. I don't want to hear that crap on Facebook. I went there for hilarious dog memes

That's what I say to a certain right wing forum which censor opinions that don't square with their viewpoints.

    I agree.

For several years I posted on a certain website that dealt with a given sport (sorry, but I will have to keep that a secret in order to protect my identity). The website's owners employed a right winger with biased viewpoints as admin. He deliberately censored close to 9,000 of my posts even though many were substantive with full documentation to authenticate my viewpoints. No amount of protest from me would stop this guy. In fact I got several PMs from conservatives who admitted that this admin was far too biased but there was nothing they could do to stop the bias and unfair censorship.

Several years passed by. The website owners decided to sell the site and all of us on that forum moved to a new site as we love this particular sport and we developed friendships. The new site is owned by a liberal! Now I along with several progressives (and even a few conservatives) often mention the past censorship and even call out that admin and criticize him for his phoniness. While he also joined us on the new site he has kept a very low profile and does not dare answer the criticism we direct towards him.

It's the old story - what goes around comes around - a lesson to all those who engage in McCarthyite censorship.

I honestly do not mind it when anyone disagrees with my point of view. It is their right to harbor any opinion as they see fit. But if we are going to have a website where the owners claim to be open minded and giving people a free range to express themselves, please be very sure to employ your standards on a uniform basis. Treat everyone alike and do not allow your personal bias to govern how you treat people. If you censor one viewpoint on a given topic, do the same for the other view.

Facebook, Twitter, etc are not the only ones who engage in censorship. All forums do, especially those with right wing biases. Some worse than others. It's time to stop such bias. Allow people to express legitimate viewpoints so long as they are not inciting violence. That has always been the standard under the old Common Law and under our Constitution. Let's keep it that way.

The American way to deal with opinions you dont agree with is to present the other side

Like the man said, sunlight is the best disinfectant

Agree 100%. But both sides need to be given equal access in making such presentation in order to make this ideal work properly.

How does having two exclusive public squares that are blind to each other improve the national politic?

The answer is that it only makes America weaker

A forum like this one and others like beliefnet are the ones that I post on as I enjoy defeating the right wingers and dispelling their lies.
