    Paywall...

Guess I'll have to wait till we experience a world-wide power outage since any such technology would require all the energy on earth.

why on earth is this posted in science?

Can a mod please move this to the Bozo section? Thanks

What would be the best dates to avoid?
    1914 -1918
    1939-1945
    1346-1353 Black Death
1793 if you were a French aristocrat
476 if you were running the Roman Empire

It became a main plot point in the TV show Mr Robot. Only thing I can think.

The good news is that since we're all here still talking about it now, they haven't traveled back in time yet to change the timeline.

The bad news is that if it works, it could happen that we could all cease to exist at any moment... Unless the Chinese plan to go to the future instead.

Upon further reading of one of the hidden links in the OP's quote, the PowerPoint presentation(This company wants to build a time machine of 200 million, with a technical valuation of 5.4 trillion? Chinese Academy of Sciences Refutes Rumors-News-cnBeta.COM – 6Park News En), it seems to be a wormhole.

I've had the idea before that if we could build a wormhole where one end of the wormhole travels into the future, while the other end remains in the present, that we could send future news into the past. And, then use it to prepare for what happens next.

A troubling thought that a major rival to the USA might be two steps ahead of us in physics and time travel.

Best evidence to date is that it wont work, it would violate causality. Assuming wormholes are possible you could perhaps build a wormhole that would sent information into the future (albeit the information is traveling in that direction anyway), alternately you could build a wormhole tin the future hat would receive information from the 'past'. An observer could see events in the past, say for instance watch Napoleon be defeated at Waterloo in 'real time' but they couldn't send any information/advice back. The wormhole would permit one way travel only. See but not touch. Attempt to violate causality and the wormhole collapses.

Bicycles are time machines. Cars and rockets are time machines. Anything with mass is a time machine. I can change time just by climbing a tree.

    What's the big deal?

But we would never know if "we're all here still talking about it now, they haven't traveled back in time yet to change the timeline.". We can only experience past events ie if they went back in time and stopped WW2, our current history books won't include a WW2 so we would never know

There also no way we can prove that we were not all created an hour ago :)

Now time travel into the future, seems ridiculous but you never know and could never be proven that anything or anyone was successfully transported into the future/

Edit: My last paragraph I take back. Could be proven by having, say, a worm hole between China and the moon, and send a clock through it, observe both ends to read the time

It was a wonderful, blissfully amusing thing when Carter announced the U.S. had planes the Russians couldn't see on radar. Can you imagine the reaction in the Kremlin? "What, that American is crazy! He insults our technology! Of course we can detect them! But, then, if they do have them and we can't detect them...."

The concept, according to the article, is to develop a device to slow or suspend the passage of time within an area, not to travel in the future or past. This way they could travel all over the solar system with a cut rate spaceship since the crew would be "suspended" in time and wouldn't need supplies for month's long voyages.

OK, but assuming that the point of the voyage would be to gather information to give us, there is a real problem here in that arrival at Alpha Centauri (or ??) would be no faster than current travel and data transmission speeds - even if the passengers didn't age.

True? Or did I miss something?

One of the questions is when to send a spaceship to Alpha Centauri (or wherever else outside our solar system).

Anything we send today would be passed by our next generation propulsion technology. And, that would probably be passed by the propulsion technology after that.

So, how long should China (or the US) wait before taking action.

Even if we had a rocket ready to launch to Alpha Centauri today, it would be a total waste to launch it!

Maybe they should launch a rocket, wait a few days and then slow down time throughout the vacinity of Earth!

We could have a branch of the UN for deciding the speed of Earth time!!

Is it only me who remembers WWIII?

Wow, interesting! It's like cryogenics but it actually works (we can't freeze ourselves and survive.)

    How do you get from

It doesn't work. No one said it does.

Since I have noticed that China is ahead of us, because the Navy's UFO patent was only approved because China already has one, it doesn't take a genius to see that China is doing advanced physics.

    True.

However a trip to mars with our current propulsion systems become much more doable.
