You do realize that lots of babies are made because of chance meetings at bars. LOL What if she doesn't want to have anything to do with the father and decides to make the baby as completely opposite of the father as possible. Brown hair instead of red.......thats a bad example since being a ginger is evil and that is one thing that rightfully should be edited out but you get the point.

At some point some woman who hooked up with a black guy or Hispanic or whatever race you want to insert will decide that she wants the baby but is resentful towards the father and decides to remove his genetic characteristics as much as possible as a big FU to him. I can see the headlines now. "Racist Woman Wants To Remove Black Genes From Her Child"

Transhumanism and designer babies are coming soon -- but only for rich elites.

Yes and they could be using stem cells to revive the dead.

The Chinese government needs to tell the world where to stick in and continue and accelerate to research to its full boundaries regardless of the cost.

Another demonstration of the human mind’s power over nature. Nature screws up, Man makes it better and better. Thank the universe for the creative mind.

One day Man will be immortal. What’s God going to do then? Murder more of his children?

Say hello to your overlord. He’s only a two year old right Chinese boy right now but in 16 years he is going to rule the world.

The next step in human evolution is genetically modified super humans with super health, super strength, and super intelligence.

We know the genes associated with health, strength, and intelligence and we know how to insert those genes into the genome.

Is it ethical to do so?

    Probably not

Do the Chinese care about ethics?

    Not really.

A dam breaks and kills 300,000 people including children in China and the Chinese are like, meh.

On the other hand, a child falls down a well in America and it receives 24/7 news coverage.

The Chinese don’t care about bio-ethics.

Personally I don't have any problem with people wanting to make their baby blond haired and blue eyed. And it's not because I am a Nazi. It's because I think looks are superficial and not all that important. I also believe parents have the right to give their child any look they want. A white couple can even make their child completely black-looking and I would be fine with it, too.

I don't think this is what they are saying at all. I think the reason they want to abort fetuses for having deformity is for the welfare of the would-be child. It is cruel to deliberately give a child a handicap when one can prevent it. It would prevent a life-time of suffering.

For now, maybe. But in the future, no. I imagine that as the technology matures, it will make things more affordable to the masses. Just like computers, they started out big and clunky and cost a lot of money, but now we have lap-tops and desktops that pretty much anybody can afford.

Wouldn't the best way to spite a lover be to just remove his genes completely via abortion of his child?

Do you even know any people with Down's syndrome? Listen to yourself. Why don't you just ask them instead of assuming it for them. It takes an extremely arrogant and conceited person to think that they know whether or not someone has a good quality of life and not bother to take the other persons input.

This is the same asinine argument about how its better to abort poor children cause they would grow up poor. WTF is wrong with you people?

You have a point, but I refuse to respond to it, due to the unnecessarily confrontational tone you are adopting.

If you want to engage people in a conversation, you need to act reasonably civil.

    Update!

China’s CRISPR twins might have had their brains inadvertently enhanced

The brains of two genetically edited girls born in China last year may have been changed in ways that enhance cognition and memory, scientists say.

The twins, called Lulu and Nana, reportedly had their genes modified before birthby a Chinese scientific team using the new editing tool CRISPR. The goal was to make the girls immune to infection by HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

Now, new research shows that the same alteration introduced into the girls’ DNA, deletion of a gene called CCR5, not only makes mice smarter but also improves human brain recovery after stroke, and could be linked to greater success in school.

First, I've been told multiple times on this forum that genes have nothing to do with intelligence, so take that scientists!

Secondly, who didn't really think the real goal of the Chinese was to create super intelligent babies? I figured they really weren't that worried about HIV.

If you only knew the potential of this new technology your concerns would seem minor.

I could tell you but every time I talk about it my hard drive mysteriously breaks.

    6 computers

In the past if the FBI didn't like you, they'd just trump up some charges like tax evasion...the CIA, on the other hand, would just kill you...

Well quickly post your concerns here before your computer breaks again.

There is ALWAYS a downside or a trade off.

Do those that are most CRISPR
    come out darker?

The US is currently using CRISPR in an human experiment to see if DNA can be changed to help those suffering from sickle cell anemia.

I'm sort of glad about that conviction, if for no other reason than it shows China taking some role and accountability in this. Had there been nothing, it could indicate a mercenary attitude towards genetic editing, which would probably be bad for humanity...

Actually I'm surprised the Chinese did that, since they've been rather indulgent so far, but maybe they are trying to address the world community's concerns.

In another decade : we will be able to weed out only 1-2 mutated genes from an egg and this will eliminate many diseases

Some diseases involved hundreds of genes and this is many many decades in the future
