    MSNBC doesn't pretend. CNN pretends.

I hate to break this to you, but there are no unbiased news organizations in the United States; each news organization is pushing it's agenda upon the American people giving them a choice at what suits them best. It's been this way since the 1950's and it's unlikely to change in our life times. The commercial outlets are out to make a maximum profit (this is what happens when you put accountants and lawyers in charge of media operations) and the non-commercial ones are out to influence donations towards their fund drives. Just the way it is.

I guess I better explain my last post in case some people didn't catch the story. An African American commentator said Trump's victory was "a White lash against a changing country ."

So you seek to discredit a news agency by making a false and ridiculous claim? Okie dokie. So nothing you say is serious.

What does this have to do with anything? Dumb and Dumber attracted many more viewers than any physics lecture in the world at any time in history. So this would imply that fewer viewers means greater intellect, depth, and analysis. In fact this is how I find great movies. I look for the ones nobody watches. If it's popular with the Dumb and Dumber crowd its likely to be pretty dumb.

CNN used to be pretty unbiased but they really slid downhill when Jeff Zucker took over and they got a huge ratings jump for their sensationalized covered of the Trayvon Martin case. Now they are a sad shell of their former selves.

Good point. CNN isn't really meant to compete against non news shows. It's how it does against other news shows that matter.

Having said that, being number 18 means having really low ratings.

They had about half as many viewers as Fox. And no surprise, the more intellectual a source gets, the less popular.

A friend was once complaining about wanting "real news". He claims to hate Fox, CNN, and all the majors for all the hype. I said that PBS has long been rated as one of or the most unbiased news source in the US, and it has been demonstrated as such by a number of independent studies.

He said PBS is too boring.

Hate, fear, intolerance, and entertainment, will always sell better than cold hard facts. Popularity is certainly no measure of quality.

That said, I only really like a handful of anchors at CNN. The woman who does the morning stuff... Carol Costello, is enough to make me cringe sometimes. And there is a definite feminist slant with a number of the women there that I find offensive. I find some other anchors to be biased at times, but they generally have fair representation for opposing arguments.

True. Being a news junkie I watch them all. It's interesting to see how the networks have the same facts, the same videos and yet reach wildly different conclusions on what happened.

Part of what divided this nation was when news became for profit. The networks were required to provide the news as a public service in return for their use of the air waves. So the competition was to be the best news source, not to make the most money. But now we have infotainment because real news [the old style] doesn't sell. But hate and divisiveness does. I find CNN to be less toxic than Fox by far, but they too cross the line at times.

I would argue that the best predictor of popularity for an infotainment source, is its toxicity. The more toxic, the more profit is made.

When I used to have cable it was always c-span that sucked me in.

Things people might say on the Washington Journal you haven't heard before and went to look up, listening to a hearing you get more info on every other subject than what the hearing is about, and they always have laws being voted on that you never hear anything about from the MSM.

C-Span is what made me distrust mainstream media, long before the internet became prolific. We are truly on the verge of a renaissance in political thought and commentary. That is what they're trying to stop with the internet censorship push. The top loves where things are.

CNN discredits itself with its own ignorance, fake news, misrepresentation of facts, etc
That's why it's not very watched. It appeals to people's emotion, not thier intellect. To see you claim otherwise is hilarious.

Anyone can watch CNN and see it slants left. I used to give them a pass and watched because it beat the slant of FOX and MSNBC. Then the DNC leaks came out and showed just how in the tank for the DNC CNN really is. I haven't watched since early summer and I'll never watch it again. I even stopped following them on twitter. Why bother it's just DNC approved and sometimes edited material. CNN is a DNC propaganda channel now.

That seems reasonable until you ask, why would any TV network willingly alienate half the population by showing a bias to one political party over the other? After all, all they have to do is report whatever happens without wondering how it'll affect whoever their candidate (since this is election news for the most part) of choice is.

How would doing investigative reporting, and holding elected officials of both parties accountable to the public hurt their ratings? This is why I don't buy the "it's all about profit" theory. Most lefty media outlets are barely treading water financially. Without being supported by their big brother networks, they would be out of business, rightfully so.

BTW, Brett Bair (spelling?) at 6:00 on Fox is as non biased straight news as I've seen. Most of the others not so much.

CNN employs the dumbest member of the Cuomo organized crime family, hence giving him a job in the news media instead of the family business.

    MSNBC... well... :roflol:

Russ, I worked in the media for over 40 years, so I've seen first hand how they do business. When I tell you its all about money (aka profits) I'm being very serious. Ratings = money. Most radio/tv outlets are run by accountants and/or lawyers who know virtually nothing about broadcasting; all they know is the bottom line and legally how to squeeze as much profit as possible for the owners/shareholders.

There is very little if any objective reporting done in this country as much as we would try to justify various reporters/networks. Brett Baier gets his marching orders from his producers/editorial board just like the reporters get theirs from the same at the other networks. People who watch Fox News Channel do so because they believe its the only channel where they can get the "truth" much like MSNBC, CNN, CBN, etc veiwers view them because they believe that it's the only channel where they can get the "truth"; it's all in the eye of the beholder. The fact of the matter is that you have choice in this country when it comes to the media; if you want liberal slanted news, you can view MSNBC or CNN; if you want conservative slanted news, you can watch Fox news or CBN (Pat Robertson's Christian Broadcast News Channel). You pick and choose what you think best suits your needs. In your case you choose to watch Fox News because you believe it's as unbiased straight news as you've seen; others would not agree with you and claim that their choice is the unbiased source of news to view. There is no happy medium. So you watch what you want and they'll watch what they want and everyone is happy and the media on both sides makes their money.

The fact of the matter is that when it comes down to it, there is no unbiased news reported in this country on television and hasn't been in decades. Just from my viewpoint of course, but then again I've worked in the business for years and observed first hand how business is conducted.

Ummm . . . talking the reality of capitalism to a socialistic Canadian is like talking about coffee to a tea drinker. It just does not compute.

Well said, and that was something that I was groping for as an explanation. MSNBC is openly working for the DNC while CNN pretends to be politically and ideologically independent . . . but isn't.

    - - - Updated - - -

Indeed. Certainly butch Rachel Maddow IS more of a man than her younger and more effeminate sister, Chris Hayes . . .
