That's interesting. Some may say the difference between those two values is statistically relevant. Wouldn't it be most accurate to only count deaths which were unequivocally confirmed?

If one has AIDS and catches a cold that person could die from the cold.

The cause of death, though, was AIDS.

Now, are folks willing to pay the cost of full autopsies for every death in, say, Texas over the last 4 months?

The obvious truth is that counts are most likely much higher than official counts because people got sick and people died but were never tested.

Not the first time shade has been thrown on the "official" numbers.

    Um...

I'm just saying that if the cause of death is determined, it should be specified, if not, then it shouldn't... although it's reasonable to say that a particular death was likely caused by the complications of some particular thing, if the symptoms were present.

So I waited until 9 PM!

I would say deaths that were likely from Cvirus should be counted. For example, someone who contracts Cvirus while in hospice with COPD who dies and tests positive probably shouldn't be counted as died from Cvirus, while someone who was on the road to recovery from pneumonia who then contracted Cvirus and died should probably be counted as died from Cvirus.

Yes because every death reflects poorly on the president's handling of the crisis. That's why he wants to back of testing. No test, no recorded case. We know with 4% of the world's population. We have a third of all the cases. No need to quibble about a few hundred cases. Why don't we just stop reporting the cause of death all together and just say that Trump has vanquished the virus the same way he defeated ISIS.Get on the aircraft carrier and break out the mission accomplished banner.

I believe a Death Certificate has to have a cause of death or a good reason for it's being indeterminate, like the body is decomposed or something. You can't just say "Well it MAY have been kidney failure, but his pancreas was in really bad shape too."

I guess I'm too OCD. I don't have an issue with a "likely caused by" category, so long as things are being accurately designated.

Without an autopsy and probably even then for people with aggravating conditions it may not be possible to know the exact cause.

But, a sudden death for someone with diabetes and testing positive should be counted until an autopsy is performed.

We'll never know the accurate totals. At best we can compare deaths with expected deaths for the period in question and postulate that an increase, allowing for other known factors, is attributable to the virus.

Total number of cases is meaningless. The only two countries that should have more cases than the US is China, whom is certainly falsifying their numbers, and India, whom has hardly tested anyone. An honest (unpoliticized) comparison would would be of confirmed cases per capita per people tested per capita. And if you can find me that chart, I'll be eternally grateful, because thus far I havn't found anywhere that wants an honest comparison. Everyone wants to try and show either how great they're doing or how terrible someone else is doing by using numbers that look a certain way but reflect nothing objective.

I wonder when Trump will put that banner up at one of his "briefings"

Widespread testing is one of the major components of saving lives here because it enables us to get a real picture of where the virus is so we can direct resources effectively. I wonder how many will have to die because it doesn't make Trump look good to find out how many of us have this disease.

You can't find figures showing people tested and then put them together with cases?

This article seems to show just that info for South Korea (~345,000 / ~9000) or am I misinterpreting something?

    She may be right,

    90,000 deaths MINUS 25% = 67,500 deaths

    HOWEVER,

    67,500 deaths + the following undercounted 25% = 90,000 deaths

Would Republicans be happy if the CDC would estimate Covid19 deaths as per their common flu LOWER/UPPER Limits?

    Example;

    2020 Estimated Covid19 deaths; 130,000

    Lower/Upper limit estimates; Between 110,000 and 150,000

Response; "Huuuuummmm, I don't like said lower limit at 110,000.....STILL NOT A GOOD RE-ELECTION death toll".............."Perhaps we should substract my brother's death; although he tested positive, and ended up in an ICU, he died of kidney and liver failure, however, the Doctor classified his death as Covid19.

What's being complained about here is exactly how FLU deaths are counted.

Flu causes pneumonia for instance and can bring on heart attacks.

Flu is the cause of death

    From the Fox interview

Polis recognized Sunday “that of course there’s likely cases that should be counted as COVID deaths that people have missed, doctors have missed.”

Regardless of the discrepancies, Polis said he does not want this to be a political issue.

Evidently, the Republicans are the ones politicizing the death toll, thus, what's their problem?

Do Republicans believe that the projected 130,000 isn't a favorable re-election death toll?????

Do Republicans believe that the CDC is trying to sabotage Trump's re-election?????

I've been saying for a long time; "Partisan politics is the most common mental illnesses in America".

    My sympathies on your brother.

And, good point. If COVID kills by taking out your favorite organs that doesn't mean it isn't a COVID death, obviously.

If someone contracts lung cancer and dies of pneumonia, that doesn't mean it wasn't cancer.
