First off: source or shut up.

Secondly: allow me to dismantle your logic, actually, scratch that, I don't need your permission to expose your foolishness.

    Microwaves can cost <$40

Some low-income housing comes with an air-conditioner, cable television, and microwave included, such as the apartment I am in. The air conditioner prevents heat illness, which claims the lives of many impoverished in the United States each year.

DVD players are now ubiquitous, and thus have dropped in price significantly. Standalone VCRs are likely not produced anymore, since it is likely that the last Hollywood release to VHS was around a decade ago. Most VCRs would come in a DVD/VCR all-in-one.

Having a private motor vehicle is not rare, however, how many of those vehicles were purchased new and how many were purchased used? Chances are the vast majority of those that have vehicles have vehicles that are not held in anything near optimum condition. Also considering that per the most recent national infrastructure report card, only 45% of Americans have access to mass transportation. Without a personal vehicle, there would be a significant reduction in the number of jobs available.

Mobile phones are often cheaper than a landline phone, not to mention more useful since they allow the user to be anywhere and be reached. Text messages are also incredibly cheap to transmit, thus why so many mobile carriers have begun offering unlimited text for very low rates.

Computers are also highly ubiquitous. I have seen Windows XP machines at the local thrift store for <$90. Having internet access does not mean that the person pays for it. Some localities have free wireless, the poor may also piggyback off of unsecured networks of neighbors. Schools are also often connected, enabling children to get access to the internet. Many libraries as well, have free Wi-Fi.

As for LCD or Plasma TVs, while CRT displays are still produced, imports of such devices into the United States are likely near non-existent for the past few years as the cost of LCD TV production has gone down.

The XBox came out in 2001, the PlayStation came out in 1994. Chances are, either device could be had for $30 at a game store. Even an XBox 360, which came out in 2005, can be had for less than $200 today, and closer to $125 since the successor console is already out, with used games going for around $20-$40. Such devices can be used by the entire family as well.

The reason there is little hunger among the impoverished is likely due to the ubiquity of SNAP among the impoverished, thus enabling them to be able to eat enough.

Section 8 also mandates that subsidized housing be kept in good repair.

Four percent of Americans in poverty become homeless each year. There are 47-50 million Americans in poverty, and four percent become homeless each year. That is 1.8 million people, in other words, MORE PEOPLE THAN IN THE ENTIRE CITY OF PHILADELPHIA GO HOMELESS EACH YEAR!!!!! If you think that's okay, I hope you end up homeless.

How many of those poor people who own their own homes were also the victims of subprime mortgage scams or other unscrupulous financial practices? Let's also not forget that in some areas, a house payment can be as low as $300/mo which is comparable to apartments. Some banks will approve loans for homes like that despite the fact that people who barely squeak past the approval rating will not be able to afford much upkeep for those homes.

I've pointed out to other dingbats on here before, comparing American homes to European homes is not an adequate comparison. Europe has twice the population density than the United States.

All in all, your entire argument is so laughably moronic, it makes me feel bad for your brain.

You need not feel guilty for being born privileged.

I'm afraid, sir, to use an English idiom, that you are pissing into the wind with these idiots. These are the folks who are immune to poverty, job loss, sickness and house repossession. Until it happens to them.
Naturally their lofty moral principles would prevent them from accepting welfare or charity...until they do.

Dude I live on less than 1900 a month. It isn't poor but it isn't rich either. And that's me and my wife of 40 years together.

Why is it ridiculous? To a poor African a car or a mobile phone is an unimaginable luxury, and what you 'survive' on ($500/week) is beyond attainable. You cannot compare what is affordable to an impoverished American to that of his African counterpart. And as for all your 'necessities'-microwave, multiple TVs, lawn mowers etc...

Because obviously an African is relatively poorer than any American. By the way cell phones seem to be about the only electronics widely available in much of the third world. No one hs evr been able to document more than about 6 million homeless and a goodly percentage of those are homeless because well meaning leftist twits shut down public mental heatlh hospitals.

I think of it more like trying to teach a pig to sing. The pig and some of the Cons on here have the same mental capacity, though, I'd have to say the pig is more useful...it gives bacon after all.

The Food Stamp Capital of the U.S. is WHITE and REPUBLICAN

In spite of the prevailing stereotypes and assumptions about who uses SNAP Food Stamp benefits the most in the United States, the highest usage is not in Compton, Queens, nor the South Side of Chicago. Instead, a city that is 99.22% white and 95% Republican comes in the lead. Owsley County, Kentucky is a community of about 5,000, residents earning the lowest median household income in the country outside of Puerto Rico, according to the U.S. Census.

The decline in the profits from coal, tobacco and lumber industries led to a harsh toll being taken on the community.

Cale Turner, county executive of Owsley County told ABC back in 2010 that economic hardships have led to a high incidence of drug addiction.

“Those with drug addictions end up in prison without effective treatment. And it happens over and over in this community. The drug problem continues to get worse every year.”

Strangely enough, the residents of Owsley County are almost entirely Republican, in spite of the traditional opposition to the Food Stamp program by the GOP. In fact, just last November, residents of Owsley saw their SNAP benefits reduced drastically as a result of Republican opposition to funding the program.

This might rank among the greatest of ironies in history: the Food Stamp Capital of the U.S. is almost entirely white and Republican.
