Coronavirus: Dexamethasone proves first life-saving drug

    https://www.bbc.com/news/health-53061281

Heard this on BBC this morning. Seems to be based on a controlled clinical trial with a large number of patients. Maybe we have something that gives hope and is real, unlike the hydroxychloroquine hype. It would make sense to use immuno-suppressants, with mounting evidence that an over-reaction of the immune system is responsible for the organ damage, rather than a high viral load.

Anything that works use it. It seems possible that this might help people who already have death closing in on them. Steroids are bad but what do corona patients have to lose?

The trial involved over 11,000 people.
It is a cheap and I presume readily available drug, and the results come from Oxford University and Nuffield.
No huge profits to be made by anybody, so all in all a positive step forward and funded essentially by the British taxpayer under a philosophically socialist approach.

Great news. I hope it is not on the Olympic banned substance list.

    Doesn't matter.

If they are giving you that, your life is at risk. So even if you recover enough to be an Olympic athlete, the drug will be long gone by the time they want to test you.

It’s readily available. Or I should say “was”. I keep 100 ml around. It’s a pretty effective anti-inflammatory for critters and is sometimes effective treating underdeveloped lungs in premature ruminant births. Good news. Thanks for the heads up @Quantum Nerd. I heard rumors about this one but hadn’t seen the study results.

This hasn’t been peer reviewed. Promising, but still in process.
