A person would be crazy to use their real name on an on-line forum given the plethora of "socio-paths" out there who might track them down if they don't like what they post. In addition using a real name would show up in a search that a potential employer might use in the course of investigating a potential
    employee.

    Stay anonymous.

I use my own name without a thought .
I would meet anyone on a reasonable basis but I am quite able and capable of dealing with those of questionable mental health .

Everytime you shop, or get gas, or give your telephone number or anything in public you are exposed.

Not all cyberspace people are geeks who hide behind a veil, many are quite bright, the exchanges are enjoybale and informative.

I agree 100%. You don't know what some people might do.

To Herkdriver & perdidochas: Exactly so. Should you damage a liberal in self-defense, the odds favor your district attorney prosecuting you. Should an angry liberal hurt you he is going to walk and no two ways about it. Eric Holder and the New Black Panthers is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to defending yourself on any level.

and there are other reasons too.

being a woman and a volunteer with a woman's group, let me share a couple of reasons:

    1) You have a stalker. No woman that has a former boyfriend that can't let go would want him to be able to track her online, it just provides more ammunition to their bizarre fantasies or paranoias, the stalker assume everything written is about or TO them...

    2) You are a victim of sexual abuse. Too often, especially since the internet has been around, pervs use cameras. If you knew there were videos/pics out here of you at nine giving oral to your dad and three of his friends, would you want to put your name out there? What adult woman that has been raped would want her attacker to be able to interact with her by googling her name?
